K, checked in this morning and so far I have learned that if you want to boost your self esteem at the expense of others you should totally go to a con.

Lets just say I am pretty sure I will be alone at the hotel gym tomorrow.

Yet the line at the pastry case in Starbucks is out of control.

Some of the costumes are a lot of fun. I don't wear mine until tomorrow and not until late. The Nancy costume she has is a little adult for the daytime crowd.

I will see the parade in the morning though that should be a lot of fun.

Also some of the late night stuff looks like it will be fun too.

The dealers room opened and the Great Gathering of the Socially Inept took the room by storm.

My favorite quote was the dealers who had to keep his book of adult sketches behind the counter because of "the forty year old virgins who get over excited when they see drawings of boobs"

Some really cool stuff in some of the booths troughs including some Viking-style knives that look great and are well priced.

So tonights agenda includes the Cyberpunk Film Festival.

quote:
Just for fun, we are swcreening a collection of cyberpunk, hacker, and technology-related short films by independant producers. Titles include "outsource" "invisible master" "cost of living" "EPICAC" "robots are blue" and "human"

Sunday morning is a series of lectures.

Telecommuting - the ins and outs

Not sure if this is the place but I have been doing some code work for these guys.

MapTool

Basically an open-source, platform-independent, multiplayer, game table that uses Java (and is therefore "hackable") as it's base.

For people who want to play RPG's but can't get the group together, this combined with a voice-over-ip program, is a decent compromise and it's free. Check it out. A lot of work is being done incorporating Dungeons and Dragons, although some crazy folk have Gurps and Rolemaster working inside of it.

Didn't see anything about that but honestly this thing is so big and spread out over four hotels that it is tough to happen across something like that without looking specifically for it.

So I blew off the film festival, I was having fun at a room party and chilling for an hour watching short films in a meeting room didn't sound as fun.

Went to the gym today (yes the line at starbucks was out the door for my espresso but the gym was pretty vacant) and then to the parade. Spent the day mostly bouncing back and forth taking lots of pics and having a good time. Hitting the dealer room tomorrow to look for deals. If anybody has anything they want me to look for let me know. Found that the chick that tried to mooch a room off us got some sucker to let her stay with them.

Going to the big room party tonight. These folks get a suite every year and convert the living room and bedrooms to a lounge with sound, lights, video, a bar, and even a nice balcony for illicit sex socializing.

We got in around 5:30 this morning from the party. Just getting to the party took awhile since it involved walking through two hotel lobby's with a girl clad mainly in silk ferns and body paint (fairy girl costume) . Most guys were respectful, one guy reached out to grab her butt until he thought better of it (she would kill him) and grabbed an elbow instead. It was a little creepy seeing the con dating/hook-up culture where people know they have a limited amount of time and will not see each other again. It leads to a lot of drunk people laying around groping things. Some of these folks you really really really don't want to see do that (it is a con after all).

Some of them you really don't mind it though Smile

Anyway I wound up getting sucked into a long conversation with Rachel from the Cruxshadows about how I need to be watching Battlestar Galatica (incidentally there was a line out the hotel and down several blocks in the summer heat to get into the BG panel discussion and apparently Edward James Olmos is a funny bastard). Then I got into a creepier discussion with her husband about the pitfalls of being a rock and roll boyfriend (lets just say groupies are involved)

Around 5am the girlfriend tells me that this guy she knows got locked out of his room and will crash with us.... She couldn't invite the hot chick in the schoolgirl outfit could she? Wink On the upside she didn't invite the pregnant girl that wanted to make out wit her either. I really don't like waking up to strange people I don't know on my floor so we made a hasty exit when he wasn't looking... ooops.

We left so fast in fact that I left my bookbag behind the bar (fucking karma). I am going to stumble back over there and see if I can get it before I go to the dealers room. There is a Japanese candy stall there I have to check out as well as a knife dealer. I am hoping to find some Robotech dvds also but I realize that Robotech is not really considered cool here.

I'm sure the pictures will be coming at some point.

Man, I'm digging on this vicarious Con experience EE. I know I thought I was a dork until I went to a Star Trek convention with a co-worker who was a trekkie. I was like the coolest dood there.

You can't see it, but, right now, I've got face resting in my hands, shaking my head side to side, quietly weeping.

So I got all my shit back but managed not to do any actual con stuff at all. Sunday morning I walked around a bit and got really tired of dealing with the morning crowd. The worst costumes, body odor, and social skills of the con.

I decided I just didn't want to be cooped up in a conferance room with any of them. Got a lot of great shots of some great costumes though.

Also discovered a new game- Punchbuggy Jayne hat.

You will have to wait for the pics for me to explain it.

Heh. Looking forward to seeing that; I assume it has something to do with Firefly/Serenity...

So Edit, did you have fun? I just got back and had such a blast! (I didn't hit the gym (ha) but our hotel was a mile away so I did a LOT of walking.)

Here are a couple of shots of me in costume. Smile I also posted a lot more photos of cool costumes on my flickr page. I'm Starrgirl77 if you want to check them out. I felt like such an amateur costumer with all those amazing getups. I was also very impressed by all the cool steampunk outfits. I think I may want to try to put something like that together for Halloween...

Goth fairy...

(This is my gothic lolita outfit I got in Tokyo.)

Here's one of the steampunk costumes that I thought was particularly cool. She made all the elements - wings, goggles, etc. herself.
