I didn't see a thread for this, but it seems worthy of discussion given the nature of Mr. Gibson's work (and it's common subject matter of popular culture.

Any comic book readers on the boards?

Same here...

The only comics I bought are the Sandman series.
It's so damn expensive around here.

there have been various thread in the past i seem to recall, and they do have a habit of cropping up here and there. plenty of comic readers here.

my most recent reading has been bryan lee o'malley's scott pilgrim, books 1 and 2, corey lewis's sharknife volume 1, warren ellis's fell #3, paul jenkins's revelations #4. got brian wood's DMZ #1 sitting, though i've not read - missed #1 of local, but given how underwhelmed i was by demo, probably best to wait for the trade. i also picked up alan moore's tom strong volume 3 and the top ten spin off smax the other day.

expensive indeed.
Also, everything is published much later, for some legal issue and translation time. I'd rather get the non-translated comics, but they are not available anywhere i know.
I got the italia Soulfire 1, that has like the first 5 US volumes, but it's unlikely that i will ever see more published

Non translated comics are available in a few shops in Paris.
That's a good thing.
The translated Sandman has only been released last year,
and from the reviews I read, it's pretty terrible.

I'd rather stick to my favourite current French authors :
Lewis Trondheim, Joann Sfar, Manu Larcenet and Riad Sattouf.

And there are so many manga series worth being followed :
Zetman, Gunnm Last Order (the sequel to Battle Angel Alita) or 20th Century Boys.

So, not being up to date regarding comics doesn't hurt me too badly.
(although I'm rabidly catching up with Usagi Yojimbo, whose French edition is not too bad, and very cheap)

mangas here come even more expensive than other comics. They're like luxury goods to me.

France seems to have a special relationship with Japanese editors.

There are long delays between Japanese and French releases, but it's not as bad as in the USA (for instance).
I chatted with the chief editor of a French anime/manga magazine,
and he blamed the delays on the elderly executives working for Japanese editors.

France seems to have proved itself an interesting enough export-target over the 90's
(when DragonBall was a monstrously popular series),
so we now get a special treatment with editors.

I've found buying the collected tpb's more suited to my needs, since I'm not as close to shops as I once was.

Speaking of which : this year, an editor has decided to release the complete works of Osamu Tezuka.
Bookshops are now crowded with them.
Some are good, but some others are not good enough...
And the quantity... It's crazy.
Do they reallly think fans are that rich?

Also :
Last month, a book called 'Japan' was released, and it's quite interesting.
It contains 10 stories :
5 from French authors that were invited for a few weeks in Japan
5 from Japanese authors

I hope they'll do 'France', next time.
I'm dying to see Japanese authors write about what they find weird in France.
(because that's what most French people write about, when they write about Japan)

Regarding comics :

I don't buy single issues.
Since the only ones I buy are older series, the collected editions suit my needs better (but are damnedly expensive).

I plan on reading the Watchmen someday.

"Watchmen" of course has to be an alltime favourite.
As anything by Garth Ennis, particularly "Preacher" and some of the stuff he did for the "Punisher".
BTW - I'm new 'round here, thou I've been peeking for a while.
Nice to meet you guys -

When i went to paris i thought that people was quite weird. Also, i found restaurants (not the top-expensive ones. Those didn't even dare to approach) weren't too clean...

Ahoy, Capt'n Footos!

I forgot to mention that I also read the two volumes of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and love them very much.
(I had avoided them because of the movie, until a crowd of WGBers in London made me promise I'd read them).

Yeah, good old steam-punk league...
Say, did any of you who are into Manga read the "Doll"-series by... gosh, can't come up with the name now. Anyway, it's kinda Blade Runner-esque, but in a more quiet way. It's about a Japanese corporation that invents dolls, kinda take-home replicants. Touches a lot of problems connected to the autonomous AI-issue and the question where "something" starts to be a person or even human. It's like Strange Days - just one SF idea thrown into a rather normal setting. Made my way through half of the last (sixth) volume last night.
Anyway, the Captain says "Ahoi!" for now. Smile
