I got a new laptop about 10 days ago that was on sale for an incredible one week Best Buy special price of $749 and is now selling for $979.99. I'm using this exclusively as a non-work related, sub $1000 home desktop replacement solution.
The good: Faster performance than other laptops in the same price range; 4GB of RAM; big 320GB hard drive; HDMI output, touch-sensitive media controls.
The bad: Bulkier than Dell's 15-inch XPS and Inspiron models; merely average battery life.
The bottom line: The Dell Studio S1535-125B impresses us with its leading performance in the sub-$1,000 category, thanks in large part to a speedy Intel CPU and generous memory allotment. Striking a fine balance between Dell's XPS and Inspiron lines, we recommend this well-rounded 15-inch laptop for students and home users alike.

I challenge anyone to find a higher performance, spec rich rig in the sub $1000 range.
Also have a 15" PowerBook G4 (1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, 1.25 GHz), and I use a 20" aluminum iMac (2 GHz C2D, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HD) at work, and my wife's computer is a white 17" iMac (2 GHz C2D, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HD).

I got one of these a couple of weeks ago (posting on it right now) 17-inch 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6MB shared L2 cache 2GB memory 250GB hard drive, Serial ATA, 5400 rpm 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB of GDDR3 SDRAM
4x2.66ghz Mac Pro at work. 2.5gb RAM, 4 HD bays, all full--no idea how much it adds up to, lol.
And my work 'puter can kill a graphics card faster than you can say 'frame buffer error'. I'm going to start putting their silhouettes on the side of it. 1 NVidia 7300 - dead after 4 months. 1 ATI X1900 - dead after 1 year and 1 month (waited until 30 days outside warranty to die).
