When I look at the most prolific threads on here, I notice that many of them were started by names that are unfamiliar to me.

I wasn't here at the beginning. I know very little of the board's origin. As I understand there was some type of...migration.

Who were these pioneers? What fate befell them? Is it true that they coded these initial threads from transcriptions written on papyrus?

How about a history lesson for all of us that weren't at the nodal point of the board's inception?

Many of the Great Old Ones - like Trogdor, The Mythod, Shadoth, RUR, charmakarmacat, digitalprimate and so on - still drop by now and then in their unceasing quest for fresh souls. There have been very welcome recent sightings of charma, hurtstotouchfire and his hydraness Metro Dynamics.

Perhaps there's a tale in that last... I see threads by hydra and Disinfo and Ineffability on the front page alone.

cyn004 don't come around here no more, not really sure why...

Like Bravus said, a few of them are still here. A couple have moved on. The ones who are here aren't the highest profile members, maybe because in the old days it only took a post or two a day to be regarded as "posty."

hydra and his sock-puppets? Well, he just lost interest, I figure, as happens sometimes.

Myths and legends? Ok.

-Mean Old Man, Nox, and two silent partners used to run "Canadian blue tar" through Simi Valley to Mexico. A Tecate crime boss tried to take over the organization in 1998, but was found floating in the Gulf of Santa Clara.

-tiger68 also moderates the space-time continuum around Detroit.

-lithos and misty were once two different personality facets of the same entity. At the request of the Australian government, Dr. Prius intervened in 2003 and separated them.

-Everyone knows about Pauline & Marsh, but there are actually three marriages that began on the board. One ended in divorce. One was same-sex. There have also been at least seven random hookups that never went anywhere, three of which were really awkward afterwards.

-Gibson posts here under various pseudonyms, cross my heart and hope to die.

they came, they saw, they fought, they went off in a huff. some got bored, some got offended, some got a life. some started cool threads and never posted again, some started catchy threads and changed their names, again, and again. some of us are still here, sleeping and dreaming, watching everything, till we wake.

And, it must be revealed, many of the names of yesteryear are still present, masquerading under names of the future.

I wasn't going to say anything, but Charmakarmacat is a sock puppet.

...

No, literally a sock puppet. In the late ˜70s, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was trying to come up with a children's program to compete with Sesame Street. Their lead puppet was a pink, furry construction of tube sock and legwarmer with the crude but adorable face of a Cheshire cat. Unfortunately, the Québécois in charge of the project was a man obsessed. He saw his program as the last chance to save the youth of his province from insidious Yankee culture brainwashing. To this end, he delved ever deeper into the secrets of the flickering box, and all too soon his reach exceeded his grasp. Among the myriad signals, he found others. The full nature of the deal he made may never be known, but on a fateful night in 1979 nine puppeteers flensed the skin off their forearms as they beseeched the lords of the airwaves to forever replace their flesh with foam and fake fur. On that terrible night, Charmakarmacat crossed over. Whereas before he had been merely nylon and thread, a receptacle for the thoughts and wishes of others, in his apotheosis he became far more, and he was not alone. A secret squad of Mountie-Exorcists was dispatched, and in the ensuing battle, Charma was able to slip away. In the time since, he has sampled blow, smokes, hos, and booze and found our light cone "agreeable" and "too his majesty's liking." While studio 9a at CBC headquarters remains forever locked and mortared away behind ensorcelled stones, the Charmakarmacat yet roams free, smoking and kicking ass.

He must be wicked to deserve such pain.
