this thread is mostly a place for rants. I mean there is still part of my personality that buys in when people push themselves to extremes to achieve anything.. the uplifting tune, the montages in slow motion...but
but.. |

Lilly works at the new walmart. One big dream for her was to see the curling. She makes 7.40 an hour and when she checked the ticket was $300.
"The olympics aren't being put on for average people.." she says. |

Especially this one Of all the propaganda clips, this is the one that gets me. Every single time.
For sure. I made a video of Bill Saunders (from the Vancouver Labour Council) reading a poem about it. I'll try to put it online soon. _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

Lots of people here, the little working class town between super swank whistler and west van thought they'd rent their houses. They bought tickets to hawaii or mexico and put them up. Got renters too. As it happens Vanoc forgot to schedule a bus between squamish and vancouver during the olympics. All the guests are cancelling and staying in whistler or vancouver instead.
Our town put up signs saying 'the heart of 2010' a few years back. Vanoc (the organizing committee) made us take them down. Clearly we are the armpit, a place to house workers for the new highway, the walmart, the home depot, canadian tire, london drugs...we've been turned into a mall on the highway with only minimum wage work in the future. Progress? For me it is. When I got up here the main industry was cutting down 1000 year old trees. Less money, more future, and with the new highway its only a half hour to vancouver so we're the new suburb. A half hour to whistler too. A perfect place to stay. Not. |

I'm sick and tired of Vanoc. Whenever I hear about them, it's always after they did something outrageous/evil. _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

We went and saw friggin ski jumping in 2000 (Park City) for $40! Even with the exchange rate, $300 is quite an increase! Especially for curling.
Although these days I think I'd pay more for curling too. (It's such a gentle game -- a drunk person's game.) |

If you're a scalper, I hear the real action is in figure skating.

I'd pay a lot of money to see the gold medal hockey game. As long as canada is in it.
Btw Lilly didn't know about the tickets we got for $25..Curling must just have a few seats. |

A friend is selling me her curling tickets for $60 each.
It's the only event I will attend. Cultural experience, and all that. Also, France will be playing. I didn't even know France had a curling team. _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

I like the Olympics.
I know it's a money-making industry and all that, but... I'm so into the whole big-sport-event atmosphere. Greece has an ice hockey team! Won't be at the Olympics though :-D And with my Eurosport subscription I'll have 24h coverage! I almost don't want to find a job until they're over. And I'd guess the $300 seats would be in the center of the circle, watching the stone coming at you. Maybe they even let you sweep a bit too. ______________________ Philip K. Dick is dead, alas! |

I went to the rehearsal for the opening ceremonies. I think the guy from oz we hired to put the show together is an art director. Great light effects...not allowed to talk about it.

I would second: france curls !?! One of only two really canadian winter sports (hockey obviously is the other). Although it aint the same since the great mr. Furby passed on his broom. Still, having been to the worlds and the scotts tournament, fuck live. Its way better seen on tv. Cant get a decent overhead shot in the building. Have to say, kinda shocked by peoples expectations. I mean, its the olympics. I love Vancouver, and Cananda, too pieces, but what does this really have to do with any of that? Its the bloody kangaroo courts of athletics. To follow knowledge like a sinking star |

Ohhh the olympics. I love this shit. The only thing that annoys me is being unable to really watch specific events because of so much going on at the same time. I will see how the network and my cable provider handle that this year. Preferably with a lot of on demand stuff. At least I an only 3 hours off the time there as opposed to 20.

Agreed. I'm only going because the tickets are there, and at least I can say I've seen one of the events. _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

I heard a holograph will light the flame...I hope it's true because it beats the fuck out of whatever member of the glitterati the Coca-Cola Corporation would have picked. _____________________________________ ::swoon:: |
