Tokyo again. My Japanese host (very Japanese, although he was a bike messenger in San Francisco for a while ... Gibsonian, yes ...) was talking about getting a good jacket to deal with "squalls", we had rain while I was there. His English is good, but not great. The Americans didn't understand what he was saying. I said, squall, a sudden gust of wind and rain, don't you know the word? They all said no. The groom said well you see, Japan, an island nation, we know about these things.

This is totally true. We were on our way to the karaoke parlour. When we got there, on the wall, a notice of a few punk bands that were playing. Of course I check it out, and call the Americans to see. One of the bands is called ...

SQUALL.

I said: now is *this* synchronicity city, or what.

I'd be surprised if a native English speaker didn't know the word... Then again, I'm also from an island nation.

The Japanese word is arashi. Also the name of a terrible, terrible Japanese boy band my wife likes.

Erm, yes, squall. Shame on your Americans for not knowing it. There are your regular, or black squalls, and then the very deadly white squall. I've been in a mild one on Puget Sound. Dramatic enough, even in a steel-hulled diesel electric vessel. Can't imagine what it would be like in a sailing craft.
