Actually, another one. This comes indirectly from Len Deighton again. His novel Bomber is about an RAF raid on Krefeld on June 31 1943 that goes horribly wrong. The pathfinders drop the flares in the wrong place, and a huge wave of bombers drops hundreds of tons of high explosive on an insignificant little town called Altgarten, to whose residents we have already been introduced, with all their hopes, dreams and infidelities. Deighton describes the desperate attempts of the fire brigade etc to cope with. It's a nightmare beyond belief, and just as they're getting to grips with it ... the second wave of bombers arrives. He doesn't go into detail after that.

I haven't got the book to hand, but as I recall the intro, Deighton says, apart from all the characters being fictional, there was never a town called Altgarten, and there was no June 31 in 1943 or any other year.

But the Len Deighton Companion has the closing lines to his books, says can you guess the book from the ending. This one I knew:

"Flight Sergeant Booth here, sir. Photo section. The attack hasn't hit Krefeld, sir, I've just been studying the negs. Street patterns are nothing like it. I don't know, sir. It doesn't look like anywhere. It doesn't look like anywhere."
