I would suggest Lumpen for a German sludge metal band, but Hasa would probably tell me that it's been done.

Came up with one the other day at work listening to a coworker complain about being too sore to work out. Great name for an instrumental roots-funk band, a la The Meters:

Listen, I can tell you one thing, don't call a band "No Cover Charge", unless you're a trust fund baby.

Ask Ornette Coleman (just won a Pulitzer for a jazz composition called Sound Grammar). He invented "free jazz" with Don Cherry. They played a gig in the UK with "Free Jazz" on the poster, and had a whole lot of pissed-off Brits wanting to know why there was a cover charge.

Ironically I saw Ornette for free at the Royal Festival Hall in 1988. You just sneak in at half-time. "Skies of America" with the London Philharmonic. Story for another night.

We thought of "Souled Out" once for a band name, but it just didn't work either, the moment we put it on a poster, it just looked wrong. We ended up being The Greengrocers. Then there was a terrible car crash, on the way to a gig, and Adam died. Another SA muso KIA, I've buried so many.

But I have absolute dibs on a name for a band. If I ever get this band together, the world ends on the spot. I'll explain later. It's from a 20th century movie, I have a theory that 20th century movies are going to provide a lot of band names. David Cronenberg made the first movie, Scanners, but then there was a sequel, called ...

Scanner Cop

-- it was quite a movie. All about the search for The Mother, incidentally (scanners were psychic mutants born of mothers who took certain pharmaceuticals while pregnant). (See Mother Issues). Very good movie as I recall, although the 20th century is so far away these days. Had a very good baddie called Karl Volkin, a real psycho scanner.

I know the real Scanner Cop. If we ever get her on a stage, the world ends on the spot. You have all been warned.

Oh, Scanner Cop. The action is where you are.

There's a real band called Holy Fuck, but the one song I've heard by them doesn't live down to the billing.
