finally watched 'Chopper' a few nights ago.
knew it'd be good. i was right. knew Eric Bana would be good. i had no idea.... also rented along with 'Chopper' was 'Kiss of Death'. not bad. the continuous right eye drip was a neat character trait. Cage was good. but..... i don't know.... watched 'Spun' on the weekend. i can't or won't comment. |

Hana Bi by Takeshi Kitano.
I had never seen it, and I enjoyed every bit of it. It's just so perfect, funny and sad at the same time. And Kitano's character is too cool to be true -- ArkanGL |

i love this flick. beautiful piece of cinema. standouts : Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg, Leeloo's nifty language. anyone know- made up? the attempted mugging of Corbin Dallas by the cracker with that great hat. i could go on but won't. |

The mugger with the funny hat is played by Mathieu Kassovitz.
Leeloo's language has been made up. Her name is Leeloominai Lekataribat Laminatchai Ekbat De Sebat (approximately) -- ArkanGL (I'm such a geek) |

Ian Holm rules that movie. One of my favorite "guilty pleasure" flicks.

"Guilty pleasure" - you're so right!
It's one of those rare movies that's still thoroughly entertaining on the umpteenth viewing. Lots of nice detail touches, too. |

Alien 3 Extras disc
I just watched it, and I realized that David Fincher is not only amazingly good at directing movies, but is (or at least was, by the time he did Alien3) the best looking director I've ever seen. Aronovsky is trying to beat him, but he won't -- ArkanGL Gay otaku |

quote: Aliens 3 was a shoddy, shoddy movie making attempt. Even David Fincher(who is not better that Aronovsky) couldn't rescue that one. Has David Fincher written any movies? And directed them also? Even if he has I doubt they are even close to Requiem, let alone Pi. I feel certain there's more, always is. |

quote:I have to agree with ArkanGL here. My favorite Alien movie was always #3 (that is till I saw Resurrection). I love the aesthetics of it, the atmospheric direction and nothing beats the dramatic ending it has. Just picturing her tumble in oblivion, embracing that creature... Just brilliant. And I'm sorry Mythod, but I think that Pi is overrated; (First of all the math in it are hilarious). |

i also must disagree TheMythod.
alien 3 was darkly beautiful. all the actors were on point, and it got back to basics. i.e. one alien being all that's needed to decimate a larger number of another species. |

Granted, it was cool to see one Alien decimate a large population of humans and rend their flesh like the proveribial hot knife through butter. However, I thought it was a little contrived and the ending, although dramatic and certainly cinematic(liquid metel covering Alienflesh is just sickeningly awesome) was totally predictable. I am a huge Alien(s) fan, Gieger fan and have plenty of Darkhorse comics to prove it(though that does not necessarily prove anything but Batman/Predator/Alien comics punt anus). I was harsh on Aliens 3, I admit it, I didn't have a cigarette for like 4 hours so I was a little...teste shall we say.
What math is "hilarious" in Pi. I am not a math head so give me the long and the short version. I mean he wasn't explaining rotating clear text funtions or Mandelbrot patterns so where is the funny part? Decryption is a complex field of study in and of itself, are you a cryptographer? If not simply explain what parts of his math dialogue (or diatribe hehe) you thought were funny. Italian Olive Oil is the best. Especially from Pulgia. I feel certain there's more, always is. Ah... Alien 3. It's my favorite of the bunch and
Sigourney has never looked better. Woo. I also like Pi, but never noticed there being all that much math in it. |

For me Alien 3 had its moments, and certainly was nicely shot (although a bit too dark, and I didn't like the Alien 'point of view' shots). However, it left me disappointed in the end. Perhaps it was too relentless. As a concept it seems like a great way to end the series, but rendering everything Riply and the others ever did (almost) completely pointless was a bit too much for me, I guess.
Hmm. Now that I think about it, I guess the problem is that there was nobody left to care about in the end. Nobody except Riply was in the least bit sympathetic, and I couldn't really care less whether they lived or died. Fairly early on in the film it became obvious where it was heading, and from then on it was just going through the motions of getting to the end. I absolutely loathed Alien: Resurrection though. It didn't add anything to the story, and I thought the ending was pretty damn silly. (I saw it on TV. Choosing not to see it in the theater was one very rare example of good judgement on my part.) ________ You have to give up. |

colin i can't say i's agree with you on
" rendering everything Riply and the others ever did (almost) completely pointless ". don't you find Ripley's martyrdom to be rather bittersweetly uplifting and satisfying? as far as nobody being left around, well, IMO that only adds to the power of Ripley's final act. c'mon colin....can ya dig IT ?!? |

just watched
fear and loathing in las vegas, which is uproariously funny in parts. still, got bored/couldn't take it after a while and switched over to grosse pointe blank, which i love, totally. the fact that everybody, always, has a snappy come-back when he says he's a contact killer. john cusack is so perfect for that film. then i coaxed my ibook into showing spirited away, which was very nice. superior animation. it has nothing on akira, but then again, little has. (getting the ibook to put the subtitles in the correct place was a bit of a nightmare though, as my screen is 4:3 and the tv is 16:9...) now i'm considering running mission: impossible 2, which i taped earlier. it's probably a shitfest deluxe, but some mindless action for two hours isn't always a bad thing. or maybe i should go to bed. it is, after all, 5 AM. |
