Oh, and I just watched Kiki's Delivery Service. Unfortunately the tape has degraded quite badly. I may have to pick up the DVD eventually.

I always find Kiki's a rather bittersweet story, because of the underlying theme of magic, quietly and without fanfare, disappearing from the world.

Oh, and Colin: luckily, all of the Disney-released DVDs of the Studio Ghibli films have excellent transfers and include a subtitled version.

Mountie on the Bounty, the finale of due South's third season - I'm working my way through DVDs sent by a friend in Canada, and enjoying them hugely. This must be the dorkiest magical-realism buddy cop show ever made, but it's very well-written and well-acted, and watching the RCMP in their dress uniforms abseil down from a replica of the HMS Bounty onto a freighter can only improve one's evening.

The weirdest thing about due South, ghosts and lip-reading wolves aside, is that it's played as comedy, but if you unpack almost any of the premises the plots hinge on, they are really very grim.

Doctor Who S04E12 "Stolen Earth"

Not sure I like these omnibus, "bring all the BBC Doctor Who Universe characters together" eppies.

Watched "Be Kind, Rewind" yesterday.

Absolutely hysterical, I loved it. For once I didn't think Jack Black was overdoing it and Mos Def was really, really good.

I agree IC, it was wonderful.

I watched the Beast with a Billion Backs and while it was good, I was hoping for more. I dunno, maybe the sexual innuendo in the title made me think of the human horn episode, which is my personal fav.

I just love watching all those babes on the green. Torres looks pretty cute!
LOL, it's a cock-fight. Big Grin

Really enjoyed the match. Great to see Spain come good after so many years in the wilderness. The Germans were will beaten. Cracking atmosphere at my local pub, but those street scenes from Madrid look amazing. Must be a few sore heads this morning.

I have not watched any of the Sarah Jane Smith spin-off show episodes. (My bad.) So, I did not 'get' a lot of her part. The Torchwood sections, I got. (Ianto looked fat.)

Saw Wanted on Sunday night, which was a pretty decent action flick. Plot sometimes went a little light, but eh... all the fights and special effects made up for it. Thought it was certainly worth the ticket price.

I rather like what Gilles Deleuze had to say about the French imprint La Serie Noire (it published detective novels, most famously in the US those of Chester Himes): he suggests that they present a new philosophy developed out of mistakes and misapprehensions, but also, ultimately, out of a spirit of experiment. Make a supposition, see if you're right, but even if you're wrong, you've learned something, you may even come out ahead.

Hmm... that rather describes my own philosophy at times. Except for the bit about the French imprint, I'm fairly sure that art is a separate teleological pursuit from the well ordered world of detective novels, of course those have been said to reestablish faith in the order of the world as well.

@Colin, no lit and art don't just serve one function, nothing really serves one function, but I'm on a rage against multicultural understanding and relativism.

Up with monolithic theories!
