there is some attempt at creating a tension which runs through the series. but its not a series with plot or character depth. its pretty much vaguely titilating fluff.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

Fantasy. Rarely do I see a movie more than twice.

I hate Ferrell as an actor. However, I liked this movie that much.

It may be that I have a crush on Gyllenhaal ("SherryBaby" was a fave.) I also like Emma Thompson, but I don't have crush on her. (If she wasn't old enough to be my mother, I'd probably have a crush on her.) And Dustin Hoffman does fine comedy.

Sparkle (2007)

Comedy. This movie reminded me of home.

Film quaility was OK.

Hoskins is always a pleasure. Channing is a true professional.

HELLBOY II is quite good.

The visuals were fantastically creepy. Had some funny.. and a lot of action.

Kung Fu Panda (accompanying two six-year-olds). Surprisingly enjoyable, although as a consequence I will be dodging teeny tiny high-kicks for some time to come.

My queue finally coughed up Live Free or Die Hard. You know, it was over-the-top ridiculous action, but I enjoyed the hell out of it!

If you've been avoiding this as yet another sequel and so forth like I had, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just don't go in expecting any of the physic to make sense. Big Grin

Block. Grab the foot and tickle it viciously. In public.

Hasa's special brand of absurdist kung fu.

since kungfu panda was showing in about 200 screens, and forbidden kingdom was only showing on one, i went for forbidden kingdom. though on closer inspection i have the suspicion that kungfu panda is buried in kiddie slots the rest of teh week.

forbidden kingdom is reasonably fun. its cliched and unoriginal, its a dose of bullet proof monk, cranked up with a mix of hero/curse of the golden flower visuals, or at least it wants to be. jackie chan and jet li on screen together is nice, though the obligatory fight scene feels like a modern cinematic postcard, rather than actually something worth watching. but then modern cinema does tend to resort to postcard over content.

Hancock.

eh.

silly story but expected that. there was no real antagonist except for the ridiculous plot.

The gunfire around us makes it hard to hear. But the human voice is different from other sounds. It can be heard over noises that bury everything else. Even when it's not shouting. Even when it's just a whisper. Even the lowest whisper can be heard - -over armies... when it's telling the truth.

"True Blood" (2007)

Fantasy. Not bad. HBO premium quality. Which means its interesting enough for TV. Interesting premise.

Well filmed.

Cast a bunch of wannabees. Some not too bad.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Fantasy. A CGI extravaganza. Frankly, I thought the plot for Hellboy (2004) was better. However, the effects budget was about 3x the original.

The setup for the "Hellboy" franchaise ("Hellboy III) was a disappointment. I don't like going to a movie where they've already got their hand in your pocket, after you've bought your ticket. They must have not made enough from Tecate product placement. Wink

Well filmed with Hollywood, summer-premium CGI. Unless you have a super-premium home theater, viewing this movie on the small screen is going to be like looking through a keyhole and listening through the wall.

Pearlman is a jewel. Make-up for him must have been hellish. I liked Blair's asymmetric haircut. Too bad Hurt had such a samll part.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

Fantasy. Made for family consumption ala The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). Which means its boring. Wait for the video.

Filming was Hollywood big budget, although the CGI has all been done before. Props were a bit lame.

Cast was mediocre. The kids would not notice.

Starter for 10 (2006)

Comedy. I found this very funny. Reminded me of University, actually.

Well filmed. Although not much better than US premium cable TV. Hall is excellent.

Tate is much better in this film than as Donna.

I watched Charlie Bartlett tonight and it was really good. I mean, sure, it's one of those finding your place in high school, everything's gonna be alright movies, but it's well done.

Things We Lost in the Fire - Pretty good. Benicio Del Toro steals the show as usual, but Berry does a good job of keeping up and so do the children.

The Butterfly and the Diving Bell. A stroke victim's struggle for restoring communication with the outside world. Agonizing, exasperating. Beautiful visuals, convincing acting and interesting plot development.
