Watched District 9 for the second time.

It's still awesome.

Land of the Blind. Farcical tale about a man that finds himself right in the middle of his fictional country's turmoil. First a soldier, he meets a political prisoner that threatens the corrupt kingdom led by the sanguinary, moronic son of a former hero. The stubborn integrity of the imprisoned politician shakes his worldview and after a stint as member of a secret counterinsurgence wing he helps the side that promises to change things for the best. But the revolution becomes a dogmatic nightmare that corrupts even the nobler intentions. And by the end, the wheel of history seems to have turned full circle.

Weird film that teeters between an acrid satire of world history and mishmash of past dystopic visions. Full of quotes and nods to old books and tales, images and concepts lifted/'inspired' from Brazil, 1984, THX1138 and Eisenstein, still it has an intriguing visual texture. Some details like First Ladies' penchant for the occult and the revolving door of faces in politics and media strike as deliciously bitter and recognizable from reality. Fiennes and Sutherland's acting, their slow metamorphosis, make up for the film weaknesses.

all this talk of District 9. Gotta see it, but not via a cam.

Frost/Nixon - a charmingly eloquent tale of the British chat show host and playboy vs. the Yanks' most popular president. Great acting, great movie, nice snapshot. I chanced 20 mins only to find my fear of the heavy subject matter was most unwarranted. Very enjoyable, fine cast, riveting storyline, all very well done (oh, and Rebecca Hall is very easy on the eye, 70's garb 'n all) Smile

England on the Discovery channel's HD Traveler show.

"Englands architecture and small towns."

wow this is disturbingly boring.

I just spent ten minutes watching some guys fly fishing in the rain.

Even the narrator is making fun of how dull it is, "Lesson 5, if you are fishing on TV and nice music is playing you WILL catch a fish."

I mean I am not even sure if this guide has a pulse and he is TALKING right now.

This guy is wearing a coat and tie to go fishing....

It really is a Monty Python world over there isn't it? Smile

That does it, I am going back to bed and cry now.

Nobel Son - Hateful father (Alan Rickman) in a dysfunctional family wins a Nobel Prize and his son is kidnapped. The story drifts back and forth between black-hearted comedy and true drama and mostly worked for me in the end.

Bab'Aziz - Sort of an Arabian Nights tale of a grandfather and his grand-daughter wandering the desert towards a gathering of dervishes while he tells her the tale of a prince lost in the desert too. Kind of confusingly cut together, but the National Geo shots of desert landscapes and life made it worthwhile.

LOL, yes it does rain a great deal here in the UK. Today is high summer, yet there are grey skies and torrential down pours. Its why our land is so green and fertile Smile Fishing, i beleive, is the most popular sport in the UK - we're an island, after all, its our heritage... and yes, when it comes to fly fishing, you really can't do it unless in proper countryman's attire IMO. I fish from the shore, and occassionaly from a small boat, wearing red or blue flotation suits, like most other sea anglers - our waters are dark and cold; if you go overboard, you need to be visible for a quick rescue.

Boring? I guess its hard to address the mindset when you're from the city. That goes for British city dwellers too - its all very much slower, out here in the sticks, as they say. Unfortunately, travel programs always seem to concentrate in the cottage, tea rooms, country pub, rural pursuits, castles and country faires/shows when trying to sell the UK! Thats not a bad thing, as it adds to the charm, but there's certainly many other assets on offer - Londons very many attractions and shows etc, taking in a stadium football game, or even a local rugby match with several ales etc. Mix 'n match, IMO.

Monty Python = English eccentricity, of which, the vast majority of the British population are very proud; Stand in line, stiff upper lip, all good manners etc Smile

Hahahahha, yeah I saw that video last night Boog. It's been almost a year since I quit so I will just admit to having been an In-Game Service Rep for WoW for a few months, otherwise known as a Game Master. Not surprised one bit....

Also watched TIMECRIMES. Highly recommended!

Just checked the US theater ratings and "District 9" is up at number one with 37.5 million, followed by "G. I. JOE", "The Time Traveler's Wife", "Julie and Julia", and "G-Force".

That's impressive.

Advertising makes a week at number one. Three weeks at number one is something else. Let's see what happens into awards' season.

I haven't seen "District 9" yet, but will. First I got an "EXPN 3-D" one week only showing to see if they achieve anything new with the technology, then the next "Final Destination" in 3-D to end summer.

And in defense of the "Lost Boys", I think the movie understood certain momentary scary "hits" on the screen unlike anything from around that time.

Sure, bass (edit: saxophone) player on the beach. The Jim Morrison shot. Keys: eating Chinese fried rice as it turns into maggots. ++ Hanging from the railway tracks on a bridge, and letting go, as I remember it. Greatness not often touched in semantic terms.

Keep it for comedy, then add "Near Dark" for more horror.

Inglorious Basterds is not the movie I'd thought it'd be, but it was very good. It's 2 and a half hours long, but it really flew by. You cannot help but love some of the characters.

Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino artfully hunts war films w/ his po-mo knife, culminating in an incendiary kino holocaust of the 3rd Reich by its own worst weapon.

finished in 2:06:55
very fast race. 2 Kenyans and an Ethiopian got the first 3 spots.
The guy who finished second, was puking his guts continuously for the last 100 meters... and the d00d kept going.
6th spot goes to Japan!

Funny and they have a whole series of them. Scripted of course, and if you look at the one where he was 'given' a truck that he freaks out about you see the whole family is in on it.

District 9 - Sooo freakin' good! So much amazing stuff packed into one film. Some great action sequences, but they didn't blow off the story line or the characters to get them. This is the "more" I was hoping for when I came out of Star Trek disappointed.

'Inglorious Basterds' with the Bro.
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! The music alone is worth seeing it again.

On the other hand, the ending did manage to disappoint both of us, paraphrasing the bro.
Me cause I expected the bastard to die a bad death, him cause he expected the bastard to come out totally clean....

I hope you didn't just spoil the ending for any of us who have yet to see it.....
