So did I. But I would rather view The Dirty Dozen for the umpteenth time then watch Inglorious Basterds again.

Funny thing is I had no problem with the gore on Kill Bill.

gore is an odd thing.
in similar japanese films gore doesn't bother me in the slightest. but in kill bill it made me uncomfortable. there is a strange line somewhere, in how its delivered/portrayed, that i can't quite work out.

I think it might also have to do with age or where you're at (metaphorically speaking).
I find myself being more and more sensitive as years go by. which is annoying.

I'm the same, Striv. I can watch the Kill Bills and the gore doesn't bother me at all.

I think it's that extra layer of derivativeness of the scenes--I'm sure I could dig around and find very similar situations in the old kung fu flicks Tarantino is obviously influenced by, creating a feeling of distance and artificiality that allows me to just enjoy the reference, rather than the actual violence.

Usually I can't stand gore--slasher flicks are right out for me under most circumstances. I'd rather be scared, not grossed out.

Or the Guns of Navarone, those were WWII movies. I would argue that this is really NOT a WWII movie. Set in WWII and borrowing some characters from the period but this was more of a Jewish revenge fantasy than anything else. I saw it with the Girl and her Father. Father is a jewish gun collector who maintains a stockpile of firearms for the next Holocaust. He liked the film with the gleeful enjoyment a child would take when he smashes the bee that just stung him.

Anyway when Taratino is on he is really on, Res Dogs and Pulp Fiction were amazing although if you rewatch Pulp Fiction today it does not age well. It has "MADE IN THE EARLY 90's" stamped all over it. I loved Jackie Brown, mostly because I love Elmore Leonard books and he provided an excellent story for Tarantino to start from. Couldn't care less about the Kill Bill's; boring from start to bloody gorey finish. Characters were lame and the action was silly.

I liked Kill Bill, but mostly for the pretty action scenes. I thought it was supposed to be silly, wasn't it?

On the other hand, I was not interested enough in what happens to the characters to ever watch part 2. [shrug]

Part 2 was better than part 1, IMHO. I tolerated the blood in part 1, but it's not really my thing. Which is mainly why I doubt I'll see Inglorious in a theater.

Defying Gravity is a scifi series where they are starting a multi-year mission of exploration through the solar system. But of course there is also a secret agenda to do with something called "Beta". It is told in flashback mode ala Lost where you frequently see scenes from their training (which started 5 years ago) interspersed with their life aboard the ship.

There's only 6 episodes out so far. Might be worth looking up!

Sounds interesting... but wait, what is this...?

I watched half of the Defying Gravity pilot before giving up.

I wanted to punch all the characters in their made-up faces.
I wanted them to die a fiery death, in the explosion of their rocket.

It just did not work for me.
I hoped it would be a substitute for Virtuality, but it was nowhere near as effective as that.

With the exception of anime (and now Inglorious Basterds) I'd say me and Arkan have pretty much the same taste. But I'll check it out anyway.

I saw Virtuality's pilot and I liked. Substitute you say? It's not happening, eh? Pitty.

And to add to the Tarantino discussion... I liked Reservoir Dogs, I liked pulp Fiction less and from then on it just went downhill.

--I did not like any part of Kill Bill.--

Watched Day of the Dead again, which I was forced to buy because it was only $5. Gotta love Bub the well mannered zombie.

As far as all the Tarantino discussion, I'm buying what he's selling. He is a movie geek, making movies for movie geeks. I fit that description and love it. It's not for everyone, but the best stuff seldom is.

Talking of gore... I started watching the Miami Vice movie on TV the other night. I couldn't believe they didn't censor the bit where the guy got his arm shot off near the beginning.

Hmmm... I don't remember anyone getting their arm shot off! I wonder why?
As for QT - he's not a movie geek. He's a geek who loves movies. I think this difference is critical in explaining why his films are so uneven.

I liked Miami Vice simply as a good cop movie. I didn't relate it to the show at all though but especially being somewhat familiar with Miami I always like to see it on film. I got more than a little tired of the 'love story' they tried to develop though. The arm was a quick shot near the beginning when the FBI agents were ambushed and snipers opened fire on them with what looked like Barret .50cal rifles.

I'd recommend getting the rental version, not the theatrical release since the plot makes a little more sense with a better set up at the beginning and some better music choices (Miami's hardcore band Nonpoint doing their cover of 'In the Air Tonight' plays during the final gunbattle.)

Yeah, Kill Bill was pretty horrible. And yet, I was watching both parts in the cinema ... only to come to realisation that the second part of the instalment just isn't going to be better.

Tarantino is simply overrated. He did make some great movies, and because of that everybody is now thinking every shit he does must be great at some level or another.

Well, it is not. If you think a Tarantino movie isn't that great, it has nothing to do with you not getting the point ... the simple truth is that there is no hidden sublime message ... this is just plain mainstream shit.
