Can any of you find the Lost thread?
I have a powerful urge to discuss this new season. Damon and Carlton explain a few things about the start of Season 6 (SPOILERS AHEAD) _____________________________ Albert's path is a strange and difficult one. |

Go Go Tales (2007)
Comedy. How can a titty bar go out of business? Filming was OK. It appeared a bit grainy to me. However most scenes were low light. Props and sets were good. Nudity. Acting was a mixed bad. Dafoe is a great physical actor. I really liked his on-stage scenes. However, he failed with the dialog. He also looks terrible in this film. Hoskins is a fave. I've always loved his 'surprised' look. The Ladies were un-remarkable. I had to go back to pick-out Argento of New Rose Hotel (1998) fame. BTW, same director as New Rose Hotel. I was disappointed by this film. It never seemed to 'jell', despite the right ingredients. It could be Ferrara (Director AND Writer) has lost his mojo. Watchable, but only if there is nothing else. |

Taking Lives (2004)
Mystery. Fragile, Super Fed in Canuckistan. Filming was good. Props and sets were likewise good. It was interesting to see an American movie set in Montreal. Handgun, and edged weapon violence. Police procedure was very weak. Good quality fake blood. (Severed head was a bit lame.) Nudity. I think this was the last film Jolie took her kit off. Acting was a mixed bag. Jolie was unconvincing. Hawke was actually very good as the psycho. I liked Martinez, but he had a poor character that never went anywhere. Perhaps he was a little too French, and not Canadien. Sutherland a good actor had too minor a part to comment on. Despite the haphazard acting, I was good with the film. That is, until every cliche'd twist you can imagine was employed in the last 30-minutes. It was a cacophony, of dis-believable [sic] twists. Watchable, but only if nothing better is available. |

i liked it a lot as well, we had a conversation about it on twitter when i saw it, minx wanting to see it and wanting to convince pigkilla its not a chick flick. i think it could be best film i've seen all year, but i also found it bleak. one of the film reviewers said he felt that the ending offered a sense of redemption for clooney's character, and that in doing so he felt that the film lost its teeth. i think he was wrong, for me the end is bleak. it may well depend on your perspective on things, and where you are with your life, but like you said edit it fits into the sense of fuzz and unease we are discussing in transition. for me it left me gutted and hollow, while i had the sense that i enjoyed it, i felt the ending left him empty, stuck in the loop of a hell of his own making which he had finally recognised as such. |

Seven Mummies (2006)
Horror. How Bad Can You Make a Horror Movie without really trying. Filming was OK. However, it was a very grainy digital. Sound was noticably poor. Sets were OK. Props were good. Costuming was Fair. Makeup was real patchy. (Good and bad.) Firearms and edged weapon violence. Gibbets. Poor quality fake blood. There may have been nudity. (I stopped paying attention after awhile.) Acting was abysmal. Some were grade-B TV actors. However, I think the casting call was done at the Department of Motor Vehicles waiting line. There may have been some between jobs pr0n-stars there too. I wish Trejo could have had some pride. This film may have been an attempt at a Troma-like production. However, it was just bad. It lacked all kitch, and it was boring in every respect besides. Avoid at all costs. |

I don't think I posted anything back when I should, but I put Rocket Man on and I remembered the last episode of Californication. Greatness! Even though season 3 wasn't even close to being as good as the previous two, that last episode was, for me, maybe the best ever. There.

Ong Bak 2 - Some amazing fight scenes meshed with a surprisingly tragic tale (for a karate movie). Impressively high production values too.
Turtles Can Fly - Now this is bleak. When about 50% of your main characters are disfigured children in a war zone, you know you're well off the yellow brick road. I don't really know what to say about this film except war is bad for children. As near as I can tell, that's pretty much the only message the director had, but man did he hammer it home. Caprica 1x03 - It says a lot about my weekend viewing so far that this is the least bleak of the 3 things I saw. I'm not sure if they're going to manage to pull it off or not. I give them another two episodes before I seriously start to consider giving up on it. |

I'm finding it hard to find an interest in that show. I've watched the Pilot and one regular eppy, and I'm unimpressed. There are things I like, for example the girl/Cylon stand-in switch. I also think the cyberspace sequences are pretty good for broadcast TV. However, the 'almost' Earth background isn't well done. Its failing to periodically 'pull me up short', by slapping me in the face with the metaphor. Caprica City (?) feels too much like Chicago. I suspect the story is never going to get as interesting as I'd like, because of the children having such a major part in show. On American TV, children are allowed to perform very violent acts (like chop off lab assistant's fingers), but they can't be seen having sex or abusing substances. That they can be Terrorists was probably as bold a step as the writers could make. Is "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" (2010) worth watching? |

"Spartacus: Blood and Sand" S01E01-02 (2010)
Fantasy. Soft-core, Brit Roman homo erotica Filming is good, although its digital. It tries too hard to be arty. Lots of sound stage sets, which could be better. Remarkably few exterior shots. Extensive use of CGI. Props are good. Models are too obvious. Costuming is mixed, ranging from good to crap. Make-up is very modern, overdone, and too obvious. Props are good. Lots of mediocre fake blood. Edged weapon carnage. Gibbets. The blood splashing, slo-mo sequences are too repetitive, and quickly become boring. Male and female full-frontal. Acting is a mixed bag. The posturing of the steroidal, gladiatorial beefcake is laughable. The female eye-candy likewise could use a major talent injection. (This includes Lawless.) But, then there is Hannah, and Mensah, who are actually good actors. This is the natural follow-on to "Rome" (2005) and other soft-core historical pr0n like "The Tudors" (2007) heavily leavened with the 300 (2006) unlikely, fascination for 6-pack abs. This show has bountiful amounts of homo & hetro T&A, orchestrated sword and shield-banging, and blood-spurting violence. However, it is frankly silly. |

October - by Eisenstein as part of my Theory Of History class.
Dreadful, just awful. Cheesy silent propaganda piece about the 1917 revolution. Bad everything. No transition shots so unless you are already familiar with the story you are lost. Horrible acting since they thought it would be best to use the actual people involved in the events. The plot was Michael Bay quality, unfortunately the women weren't. It was so ham handed I have to wonder who really bought it. It was like Fox News without the subtlety. -- I can see clearly now the rain is gone. |

I could not make it through the first episode. Just could not bear it, even with the soft-core T&A underpinnings. ------------------------------------------ Looking to escape reality at every turn. |

X-Men Origins Wolverine or rather I tried to watch it.
Bloody fucking awful. Just terrible. Not even a fan of the comic so I didn't care how far they veered from the original storyline it was just a terrible flick, I turned it off at about minute 25. -- I can see clearly now the rain is gone. |
