Anyone planning on going to the Milwaukee appearance? I've never been to one of Schwartz's author appearances; how early should one arrive to guarantee a spot inside?

Careful with that axe Ersatz

I am guessing William Gibson is not going to be at the announced locations all day. Does anyone have any specs about the times?
By the way, did it occur to anyone else that "pattern recognition" is a concept that Gibson creates in Idoru?

OK, so I have little experience in the fanboy department. When you go to a book signing, what's the etiquette? Can you get multiple books signed (well, not an entire collection, obviously)? Only the book being promoted (I don't really want a paperback version of PR; my HC is in prima condition)? Do you shake hands? Do you get to ask a question or engage in other witty banter? Do you get to poke the author with a dull stick or present them with a helper monkey?

From my experience at other signings (never been to a WG signing), the bookstore will probably have a rule about how many books the author will sign, but 2-3 is usually ok.

If the bookstore wants you to buy something, get a paperback but bring your old first edition and get that signed instead. The author won't care what book you want signed as long as he/she had something to do with it.

Check with the bookstore how long WG will be signing so you know what time you should be there. You may have to stand in line for quite a while - some authors will sign for everyone who's there, some only for the time that has been announced.

If there's a reading you sometimes need tickets (usually free) so be sure to ask about that too.

Shaking hands and asking a question is fine but don't overdo it - there are lots of impatient people in line after you. Dull sticks are reserved for people who outstays their welcome at the authors table. I'm sure anyone would love to get a helper monkey.

I attended the book signing in Los Angeles on Feb. 6. The guy in front of me had a bag containing the entire Gibson collection. He sort of appologized when he handed them to the author, but W.G. responded with "no, no, I love it" and signed them all happily.
I instantly regretted only bringing Neuromancer and PR.

Digitalprimate Management Corp (Delaware), LLC would like to inform the good members of the board that neither the first homoerotic reference nor the homophobic post following it necessarily represent the views of Digitalprimate Management Corp (Delaware), LLC. Unless of course they are drunk and confused.

Many thanks.

Anyone know the difference between Q/A and Discussion? Is discussion not interactive?

Also, is it appropriate to give the author a small gift (not a helper monkey, they are all out at my local Costco, but I do have a very rare Steely Dan bootleg...)

I think it is appropriate.
If I were Gibson, I would like people to bring me stuff they think could please me.

And I can't picture him reacting badly : "What is this lousy bootleg?! Go away from me! Guards! Guards!"

Anyone go to the signing in Westwood on Feb 6?
I missed the first 15 minutes (traffic, of course) Did he say anything before the reading?

That was my first time seeing The Man in person. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about engaging him in conversation while he signed my books. But it all went well. Next time I will try not to be such a wuss.

I went. I missed all the reading, actually. But I got a short chat and a signed copy, which was all that mattered to me really.
