Please Tiger,

The board keeps crashing on me.
I don't know if it's cause I'm out in the boondocks called Greece but this evening every time I access the board one sec and then for half an hour it's down, and then I access it again for a min and then it's down for another half an hour.
Please get the groupee dudes to get their game straight!

[edit]Let's hope I actually manage to post this

Interesting. When I access the wgb from an internet cafe, without logging in or giving any passwords, the next moment I look at the homepage, my name's there as logged on. Is someone watching? Wink

And if someone else uses this machine to access the board, will they become crazy carlos? This could be a problem, because I'm really crazy, you know. Wouldn't want any of my karma to rub off on anyone, it's the devil to dry-clean.

Do you always use the same station?
Don't you hard reboot the station yourself at the end of your session?

Mostly always, they let me keep documents on this hard drive. And no, never.

When you logged in did you check the "Remember Me for http://www.williamgibsonboard.com" box? That would leave a cookie on the station.

...

Mmmm... cookie...

Well then, that's why.
It's a security issue. People can sit there after you and access your email, bank account, anything you logged into through that station.

Obviously the netcafe doesn't reboot their stations either. You really should make it a habit after each session.

[edit]And I bet you never hit 'Logout' when you leave the WGB either. You just close the window.....

Ah well, you lost one bet, because I do ALWAYS hit logout. I'm logged on at a different cafe today, but a station I often use, it has the WGB in its URL memory still, but it didn't register me on the site. I suspect that other machine acquired a cookie.

Listen, I don't trust e-mail for ANYTHING serious, [for "serious, read "confidential"] -- I don't use ANY form of electronic banking, I pay a great premium to deal with human beings at banks (including the time taken to explain this to them when they wonder why I don't have a bank card), 'cos I don't like arguing with machines about money, especially MY money. All the documents I leave on machines, everything I send, is stuff I would like to disseminate as widely as possible, anyone's welcome to read them.

But no, my internet cafe never reboots machines... we don't have time...

Thanks for the advice though. But I do think there's a problem with cookies and the WGB, users should be aware.

I'm back at the usual station, the cafe cleaned up the machines yesterday including cookies, and I'm not registering on the board 'til I log on. A bit of housekeeping always helps.

Not to be a nerd or anything (god forbid). But if someone types "www.w.." on this station, all kinds of things recently accessed helpfully pop up, like "www.webmasterworld.com/form107.14.htm" and "www.who.int/employment/vacancies/em". It would be really easy for someone to see the WGB's URL and click on it, and suddenly I'm here when I'm not. I'm still watching this. Right now -- I'm here... but not for long...

I strongly recommend logging out when you're
finished with the WGB for a time. You can always
log back in later.

You also might want to try clearing the cache if
you're that paranoid.

The point is, even logged off, it registers me as logged on. It actually happened again last night after I logged off. I got the administrator to wipe out all cookies, and I was then no longer registered as logged on. So we're definitely gonna eat cookies from now. I'm not paranoid about this in particular, just like to keep things straight. If I owned my own machine, I might get paranoid...

Trying to attach a JPG to this post, kept getting the message error:

"This file cannot be accepted. The allowed file types for upload are: text."

Gave up and linked to the image hosted in another place.
What? It seems to work OK on the 'Draw a picture...' thread. In fact, this has been an intermittent glitch. Or is there some quota/limit for attached images?

You complained about that before didn't you yer? At the time I didn't understand what you meant, but I just looked and it finally clicked with me.

In the thread list for the "News of the day & Current Issues" the set of page numbers for each thread does not appear in the "Topic" column. For comparison, in this, the "Announcements" section, the Topic heading does contain page numbers (for this thread the Topic appears as "If you have Discussion Board problems or comments Page 1 2 ... 18 19", the "Page 1 2" bit is missing in the News section of the forum).

Another thing that I just noticed. It looks like you can't make posts with attachments in the Announcements part of the forum.
