That is a shame.

If you need a ticket to get into the Charlotte Square Gardens themselves, then perhaps purchasing one for a different author event might suffice.

Judging from the publicity, the author readings will take place in tents or pavilions. If there is a separate ticket for each tent, perhaps you can mill around outside the William Gibson one, the "Scottish Power Theatre" and listen to the reading and question answer session from outside.

With a bit of Social Engineering, it may be possible to join WGB friends in the queue afterwards for the book signing ?

Hmm...

Perhaps we could formulate a totally cunning plan...

an email is in my profile if you want to discuss options.

surprisingly, it does actually all seem to be in the one area, must be the most self-contained part of the edinburgh festival going.

gibson is in 15.
just noticing tickets say no cameras, but its ok for them to film you. that kind of thing always pisses me off.

Now that we're planning a sort of bizarre reverse escape plan and I'm seeing the quaint map of the square...

What if they have a giant balloon to keep out intruders?!

If the queue for William Gibson is in the "Signing Tent" with a cafe & bar [14] rather than where he is giving his reading [15], then just clutching a copy of Spook Country should be enough to social engineer your way in without any trouble.

Hmm...

It's rather a long way to go straight after work just to get a book signed, but can anyone remember the last time William Gibson touched down on the bonny banks of the Clyde?

But, but, that's like...let's see... a quarter of a YEAR away! I think I'm gonna cry.

Why does Penguin spurn the author's very hometown? I move to Vancouver and he goes off and reads in all the places I used to live? What have I done to deserve this? What's Seattle got that Vancouver hasn't got?

(Not that I'm taking it personally.)

Hint Hint. CBC's Studio One Book Club, like what happened with last time with "Pattern Recognition". I seem to recall they had a studio audience or something.

http://www.cbc.ca/bc/bookclub/williamgibson.html

Just like he did a "This Is Not A Reading Series" (TINARS) in Toronto last time too.

He'll be on CBC's book club on September 6.

Vancouverites (or those willing to travel!) can enter for a chance to win tickets.

First post: thanks much to all who put your thoughts out in this and other fora: your clarity, humor, and creativity have dragged me out of lurking, fwiw. I've tried meats w/"book groups", etc., but they've not been nearly as interesting, and other agendas usually surface at those, scattering whatever sand-mandala the group has created. 'Appreciate this reader-hive, along this series of pipes.
As for the SC book tour, I'm disappointed to miss Mr. G *again* due to other travel/biz; maybe he or his publisher could make the events, or a digest, available online for the schedule-challenged. I'd shell out a stack of piastres to download a stream or receive a DVD. Although tomorrow's party will keep me occupied awhile, this out-of-the-loop geezer type remains very grateful for y'alls' postings of interviews, articles, etc.; I buy 'em when I see 'em, but too often I miss out. Tanx salade.
BTW,The New Yorker of 2007.07.23 has a quick review of SC on p. 79 under "Briefly Noted"--'hadn't seen that mentioned on the board, although others that *are* posted include more depth and detail. I'd post a link if I knew how.
'Safe travel and happy meatings to those attending the tour!

Nice first post, trask. Out-of-the-loop geezer types are most welcome here - we even offer help to your tech problems - and can give a "post a link" tutorial:

Just hit the URL button in the editing window, type in (or better yet copy and paste) the address of the link and give it a Catchy title.

Quite frankly, the button really should say "Link" rather than "URL"...

Anyway welcome aboard!
