Oohh that was fun watching!

Funny with some of the "distracting" background noises:

1) The noisy kid in the background - made me kept pulling out my earphones to hear if one of my own kids had woken up and was crying.

2) The train whistle trilogy! At first I thought it was some odd special effect to seperate sections of the footage. But the 2nd time around, I thought - "Damn - I wonder if Cody's has gotten a new address" as it reminded of me when I used to go to a studio down at the Berkeley dirt yard and jam with some jazz musicians (or rather provide Tangueray and learn about what jamming is all about, and occasional blow a little into my flute when the others insisted). Turned out Cody's had moved, no wonder I couldn't recognize the space from when I had seen David Lodge, Isabel Allende, etc.

As the "Belonging Kind" is my favorite Gibson short story, I enjoyed when he mentioned his feeling of "Passing for Human" as a youth.

Do you mean the long-haired-Sterling-ish guy who kept pacing back and forth behind the Man? I guess I'm too tone-deaf to have heard him, but it was funny how much time he spent in that aisle.

The train whistle was an interesting quirk.

That bit on "Passing for Human" was great - the "did I miss a memo?" feeling of dissociation.

Hello all, a new comer here, does anyone know whether there will be a Canadian ( specifically , Toronto) book tour? If so, where and what dates?

Many Thanks.

Thanks Martin,

Better order my copy of "Spook Country" so I'll have it in hand on time.

philadelphia was fabulous.

i was lucky enough to be the only spectator to share the stairs with him as he arrived. kind of cool, wordless slow-motion as i'm on the stairs with my toddler and i recognise wg come down. like a first crush at school.

anywho, the library was packed. lots of buzzing. facts and theories. he began with a read from sc, chapter 20, tulpa.

was fantastic. he reads like clint eastwood with a deviated septum, but it was awesome. spot on in every little nuiance i'd imagined. then it was onto questions.

there were only a few brave souls. i had a dozen i would have asked had i not read the boards before. the neuromancer question came up. why switch from sci-fi to present fic. he went into how sci-fi was as much a social commentary on present day. (if i remember correctly). he jokingly added that he and sterling considered sci-fi authors charlatans and that they strive to be at least honest ones.

**i could be misquoting a bit as i was distracted by the howling laughter of my toddler echoing from way down the halls. she was the only child in the building. whoops.**

he ended with a hoarse voice, taking fewer questions that some had hoped and promised to sign some books. a total sport he signed almost everything anyone presented.

as i went up to sign, i asked for a picture. really super, sure. we're posing and this crazy lady shoots out of nowhere and snaps off a few. "your fan or mine?" i ask. he laughs, "definitely yours." he signs my book jasileet and i mention i'm a wgber. "that makes sense." lol "tell the gang," he mentions, "that i'm shaved and sober."

"i'm not. oh, well. will do. thanks for your time."

fucking fabulous.

Yes, it was a bit of a rush, as is, I suppose, punching out this post on the thing itself. I bookmarkt the Board on my phone, which I'm not sure how I feel about - I like keeping my post-count at a mysterious, antisocial less-than-100 posts...

PS - fuldog, sorry for biting your flectarn vibe, I didn't read your "What pattern are you?" post till late last night! Great minds... ;-D

+1

I got quite a kick out of that too. Now I have slogan to proselytize with. In the past two weeks I've gotten two of my friends to start Pat Rec.

Hi - I suggest calling Borders and asking - different stores have different policies. I called them before his last signing and I think they said you didn't need to buy the book there. (I couldn't go so I don't remember for sure.) I went to the Politics & Prose event Fri evening. I'd only been to one other booksigning - by David Lynch!
At the Lynch event you didn't need to buy the book from the sponsoring store, but you couldn't have anything else signed. Gibson signed everything, I think. Lynch wouldn't personalize his signatures ("To Richard...") but he had 200+ to sign. I didn't ask Gibson to personalize, but I've seen pix of books he personalized on this tour. Politics & Prose told me they'd gotten a lot of calls so I'd expect a crowd in Baileys Crossroads. I suggest you arrive early for a good seat. There weren't any restrictions on taking pictures so several of us did. I posted them on Flickr - search "William Gibson" or for the next week or so you can use a "guest link" here: http://www.flickr.com/gp/18586444@N00/1272E4

Great crowd and he was terrific. Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply. I ended up calling Borders yesterday and the Cody's Books video helped as well. We are about to leave in a few minutes for the drive from NC. Should be fun! I had all kind of weird WG dreams last night. Can't remember much about them however.

Great discussion in DC last night.

Thanks, Mr. Gibson, for your patience and endurance! It was a hell of a long line at the signing.

And reminds me of stoned afternoons in NE Georgia with 'long-hair types' circa 1978.

Anyone do a head count for the 8/18 reading? I was in the third row and I was guessing 100+ people. I was lucky enough to have a very early number and didn't have to wait long in the signature line.

The reading and Q&A seemed like a blur.
