When I think about a Gibson sighting, certain images some to mind. William Gibson's likeness on a piece of toast. His image faintly glowing on the backboard of a basketball hoop. Or a bust of William Gibson crying tears of blood. That's what I think of when I see the "Gibson Sightings" thread. Yep.

Gibson is the messiah! All praise be! For is it not written that the sky will be the colour of a television tuned to a dead channel? And lo, the air was filled with the dire and ever circling wolves of disrupted circadian rhythm! Truly, these are the end times! Big Grin

Don't know if anyone saw this. I guess it's sort of a Gibson Sighting.

Do you refer to this image?

Or maybe this photo depot?

Or the surprise that you are unable to insert an image, give any credit to this board readers, or wonder what happened before you decided to show us the wonders of your intellect?

Damn. My fault. Didn't mean to offend anyone by posting a previously posted picture. Jesus.

I don't think you should worry about it too much. Some people are easily offended...

I can imagine that WG is just thankful that for once he's decribed as 'of Pattern Recognition fame' not had the usual descriptions 'grandfather of cyberpunk' of the more accurate 'of Neuromancer fame'.

Just how famous is Pattern Recognition anyway? Obviously I knew about it from the proof copy I got before it was released, but otherwise I saw no publicity for it. I sometimes suspect that I'm studying an author whose work is largely ignored by the majority of the world and is only noticed by the minority for one book back in 1984.

Can anyone explain this?

This is a false sighting I think. Like when I saw bigfoot at camp.

Geez, I'd have thought it's a pervasive error, seeing how many times online booksellers repeat it...

Don't know, have to make some enquires....

The ISBN turns a slightly different result, but similar in what matters:

Judge Dredd (Audio Cassette)
Author: William Gibson
Format: Audio Cassette
Pub. Date: 01 July, 1995
Publisher: Random House Audio
ISBN: 0553476793

Barnes & Noble has it as Bantam Doubleday Dell.

A seller in Amazon has the "juvenile version" as well (with a different ISBN) as part of listening Library, and being the abridged audio version of the book adaption of the film "Judge Dredd". 2 tapes, 3 hours, 20 minutes.

Then Barnes & Noble has Martha Banta as author for the same ISBN, but all the used ones on sale around use the ISBN author.

Interesting indeed.

William Wisher did write the screenplay for that, and Ian Gibson is one of the main illustrators, so I suspect it may well be a psudonym to hide who took part.

There are plenty of copies available, so it may be possible to check it out.

Don't forget that there is more than one William Gibson in the world, for example the author of the play 'The Miracle Worker' was also called William Gibson.

I once did a google search for "William Gibson" and an obituary poped up for one "William Gibson". My heart sank as I started scanning the news for headlines of the great authors death.
On the positive side I found out he was alive. On the negative side some other guy is dead and that fact is being advertised on the internet, but then again what isn't?

I don't know what I would do if WG sat beside me at a bar. Probably have a beer with him I guess.

I think I'd probably start laughing. Not laughing at him, but laughing in release. There a few thousand people on this board, people who are here because of him and his writing, people who are insane and normal. People form friendships on the board. People use this board as a way of reaching out to others. I've met some pretty awesome people on this board. And it's all because of him and his writing.

I mean, that's HUGE. If I had that kind of following, if I could honestly say that because of me, people gather, I'd feel pretty damn good. Because whether he meant to or not, Gibson made a difference.

Yeah, I'd probably start laughing. And then I'd ask him if he had any idea that his work would impact so many lives. Then I'd probably thank him and laugh again.
