About if there's a metro station nearby. I don't think there is, but there is bus service to Bailey's. Hope the roads are clear (what kind of region consistently fails to plow, even when they know something big is coming?)

My wife and I is/was planning to go as it is the closest of the tour dates to NC. A drive from here to DC seems pretty crazy at this point due to the weather. The wife is pretty much saying she doesn't want to go at this point. I am still trying to figure out if they are still planning on having the event or not. His Blog entry makes it sound like he is/was stuck in NY. I tried to call Border's earlier today and nobody answered the phone.
Justy, right, there is no Metro rail station close, and the only buses are 20 min rides from rail stations in good weather so forget that. I'm driving then, If you live anywhere near Adams Morgan and want to go with me let me know.
Richard - as far as driving from NC, I would think 95 will be plowed prety well by tomorrow afternoon, and the Bailey's Crossroads Borders is not too far from the highway, I think. [See this link] I would try coming. An alternate idea is taking Amtrak to Union Station in DC, the trains are running OK apparently, and Metro rail to my neighborhood where I could give you a lift. Let me know.

I heard earlier this morning that Amtrack is NOT running south of DC today. In fact the DC Metro(subway) is only running on the underground tracks. It's pretty difficult getting around here.
Maybe I'll go make a snow angel in the middle of the Beltway
I just HOPE AND PRAY that they re-schedule the signing.
I tried to call the store, but there was no answer. However it was also 7:45am. I don't think that they open that early on a 'normal' day. I guess that my coffee hadn't made it to my brain yet.

Well, Borders has allegedly been open for half an hour (if they opened) and there's no answer. I'd think there'd be a recording if they're closed but honestly even if the signing happens just getting out of my neighborhood in alexandria would be a herculean task. *sigh*

How cool is this. THe electronic community trying to organise a car pool to get to a Gibson reading. Good luck everyone in getting to the event. Bundle up.

"In any case, I won't be there, so stay home, stay warm, and maybe I can cover DC later. Me, I've checked back into the hotel and plan on catching up on some more sleep."
Oh well. Looking forward to the hopefully rescheduled date. I might suggest to the organizers that he do the Borders on L Street in downtown DC, much more friendly to public transportation, or perhaps the Borders at Friendship Heights, in DC, also Metro-friendly.

20 inches of snow is not 'snowed in' in Boston - it's 'light precipitation' ;-)
But... the ease with which I can get to the signing nonwithstanding, I guess you're right. 2000 cancelled flights on the East Coast, and when the snow stops none of the planes where they're actually supposed to be -- I guess there's no way WG will be here.

Since most of Boston, and Cambridge, as well as the eastern half of the state, is pretty much closed down, I'm thinking the signing here will be rescheduled. I called the bookstore after 9 a.m. and they weren't sure, they wanted me to calla back after 12.
I'd think that, with the weather being as bad as it is, if Mr. Gibson were going to travel, he might be able to get places sooner by train, not plane. Less of a security hassle, in general the tracks get cleared quickly--I may be wrong, however.
I hope he does keep Boston on the signing tour, whether it's now or rescheduled.
All best, DermaWoma
