By the way, "Hollis saw tungsten-lit industry beyond the bridge’s railings, a concrete plant". Not even old low-tech concrete plants are tungsten-lit these days -- too expensive in electricity, and you have to change the bulbs too often. Most industrial plants use "sallow-yellow sodium vapor" or "actinic blue mercury-vapor." Both colors are much scarier than the homey black-body yellow of tungsten.

hello tri44id. I know of some concrete plants (and other industry) that still use tungsten lighting Big Grin
But even if there aren't any left in Vancouver, another angle might be that it is temporary mobile lighting for a special 24hr pour on a big structure or...perhaps there's something shady going down under the guise at the concrete plant that requires bright.mobile. 9m-tungsten-halogen-towerlights.

exactly!

actually thinking about this while i drove home from the cinema last night - i would tend to suggest it wasn't before PR. i'm sure we've got a feel that this book is set post 9/11 as well, and in an environment of terror/crime/datacleaning that suggests its further into the war on freedom.

the pamela thing is most likely entirely coincidence, but it would be an amusing little nugget, to go with the blue ant logo, just to keep us bunch of sad-acts happy.

I could see Bigend rehiring Pamela and definitely keeping Dorotea on as special teams for those corporate investigations that require their special talents.

Assuming Dorotea isn't in a concrete-filled barrel at the bottom of some Russian lake.

Re the tungsten thing, maybe Hollis isn't an expert on the lighting used for concrete plants? I wouldn't even be surprised if the identification of the industry as a concrete plant was wrong. The author is communicating the impressions of a character, and characters can be wrong you know, as can authors. By the way, I don't mean to put down your interesting post there tri44id. It's an interesting point that I wouldn't even have noticed otherwise.

I do work at an industrial facility, and indeed most of the lights are high pressure sodium lights (best life and luminosity per watt). We do use halogen tungsten incasdencent lights however for point lighting, specially for night construction work, but they give a strong white light rather than the mellow yellow of traditional filament lights, so I doubt those would be associated with tugsten (around here they are called halogen lights).

However reflected high pressure sodium has a softer yellow than the almost orange of the traditional sodium vapor lamps (I can see it by comparing our lighting with the street lights just outside), so from a distance it might be similar. I get the impression this sight is plucked directly from a trip from the airport, so, as Colin pointed out, it is a perception thing rather than reality.

M/V JAMAICA STAR

This gets cooler by the minute.
Feels like playing that old console arcade game Spy Hunter where you start out in the car and if you make it far enough you get to boat then the aircraft with that peter gunn playing in the background. Never had enough quarters to finish that one though.

Alright, maybe Panama City, Florida, the Myrtle Beach of the Panhandle. Might get to see some rednecks now.
Jamaica Bay maybe a redneck against new jersey (derogatory remarks and such to provoke a fight) mafia fight.

Panama City as port of registration doesn't say anything about the place. But I also saw it to be somewhere south. I looked up Lion Sun. I found the iranian seal/coat of arms (of the shah era) but that could be coincidental.

Interesting quote in the Wikipedia article on SERE:

quote:
According to a November 14, 2005, New York Times op-ed column by law professors Gregg Bloche and Jonathan H. Marks, the Pentagon "flipped SERE's teachings on their head, mining the program not for resistance techniques but for interrogation methods.

Compare:

quote:
He tapped the folded paper. “When I first saw what they were doing, I knew that they’d turned the SERE lessons inside out.

I notice that he's corrected the typo I pointed out, too. Wink

...Past reports have described political offenses as including sitting on newspapers bearing Kim Il Sung's picture, noting DPRK founder Kim Il Sung's limited formal education, or defacing photographs of the two Kims. Foreigners are not exempt from such rules. In one case a foreigner working on international broadcasts for the regime was imprisoned for 1 year without trial for criticizing the quality of the regime's foreign propaganda and then imprisoned for 6 more years (with trial) when, after his release, he claimed in a private conversation that his original imprisonment was unjust.

Common criminals were occasionally amnestied on the occasion of Kim Il Sung's or Kim Jong Il's birthday...

...Since the late 1950s, the regime has divided society into three main classes: "core," "wavering," and "hostile." Security ratings are assigned to each individual; according to some estimates, nearly half of the population is designated as either "wavering" or "hostile." Loyalty ratings determine access to employment, higher education, place of residence, medical facilities, and certain stores. They also affect the severity of punishment in the case of legal infractions. While there were signs that this rigid system has been relaxed somewhat in recent years, it remained a basic feature of KWP political control...

core, wavering or hostile?

A memorial to Vladimir Tatlin would be cool.
"...not the old, not the new, but the necessary..." - Vladimir Tatlin

I'll have to check out the documentary _Beyond Cubism_ by Michael Blackwood now.

Just listened to Run Run Run for the first time in awhile and the first thing I thought of...

UNION SQUARE
Big Grin

Run Run Run

Teenage Mary said to Uncle Dave
I sold my soul, must be saved

Gonna take a walk down to Union Square
You never know who you're gonna find there
You gotta run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you

Tell you whatcha do
Marguerita Passion had to get her fix
She wasn't well, she was getting sick
Went to sell her soul, she wasn't high
Didn't know, thinks she could buy it
And she would run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do
Seasick Sarah had a golden nose
Hobnail boots wrapped around her toes
When she turned blue, all the angels screamed
They didn't know, they couldn't make the scene
She had to run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do
Beardless Harry, what a waste
Couldn't even get a small-town taste
Rode the trolleys down to forty-seven
Figured he was good to get himself to heaven
'Cause he had to run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do

I couldn't find that on the net.
