Interview with WG, broadcasted in german television (3SAT) some weeks ago. In the original broadcast, the interview was conducted in english with a german voice-over translation, but that shouldn't be too annoying (I just saw the tellie-version).
http://www.3sat.de/3sat.php?http://www.3sat.de/scobel/121682/index.html Go down to "Interview: William Gibson im Gespräch mit Gert Scobel". Haven't found the link here though it has been online for a couple of weeks, if it has been posted already, please ignore. I like the Proust-questions. "Thank you Marcel ..." I hate voice-over. It's no longer technological necessary.

People still don't want to read during moving pictures. --- "I knew their tastes were very different and because the french like Dick a lot." -W.G. |

People don't want people talking during their movies either. Subtitles I can ignore, but voice-over is quite hard to ignore while still being able to make out what a person is saying. But mostly I dislike it because it ain't technologically necessary. Hasn't been since stereo became normal.

If you know both languages, it's hard to push one into the background. It's like hearing an echo all the time: You always hear the rest of a sentence repeated that you just heard and started thinking about.
Hasa: Stereo: You mean that if you have original left and translation right you can tune one down? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Billy Billions, |

Oh, I see, he meant voice-overOVER.
That is, over the English and such. I think of voice-over as narration. You foreign devils are wacky, it's a good thing Uncle Sam is looking after you all. --- "I knew their tastes were very different and because the french like Dick a lot." -W.G. |

Yup, too bad he has a squint, though. |

Wow, that is fucking annoying.
I see Hasa's point. Jesus, why didn't they just use subtitles? Really impossible to watch. --- "I knew their tastes were very different and because the french like Dick a lot." -W.G. |

Yep, two channel sound. All modern tv sets are capable of stereo so it wouldn't be a problem. And technology has progressed a lot since the eighties when this process came into use so they could use something even more sophisticated now. Subtitles are more expensive then voice-over. And there is a tradition that's not dying easily. ------- Birth, School, Work, Death |

Boy, I didn't realize how loud that voice-over is until I tried to make a transcript for another thread.I fear that unless you understand the "whacky foreign devils", this will be useless for you.
