The character Alberto Corrales has tattoos down his arms done by a Japanese artist who abstracts writing beyond any point of recognition, then randomly generates a sequence of characters.
Is this inspired by a real artist? Does anybody have any leads on this? Thanks! |

When I read the book, I envisioned it as the kind of stylized text graffiti tags use, but using random letters rather than any actual content.
There is a long tradition of using letters and words as ornamentation as themselves, without reference to the actual meaning of the words or in many cases forming actual words, from the Rabbinic micrography to Muslim written ornamentation, and even ascii art (where you create images out of symbols). The art would be creating a stylized alphabet that looks good even in random combinations, if it really is a random combination, rather than creating a image you like using symbols (disregarding any potential meaning). Something like this: Names. Numbers. Held as though they might be a map, a map back out of the underground. |

The exact text is "It was designed by an artist in Tokyo. He does these alphabets, abstracts them until they're completely unreadable. The actual sequence was generated randomly."
It sounds like more of an artistic process than highly stylized graffiti, for example. |

I envisioned the tats to be more inspired by graf bombs and pieces than tags
