I'm about a third of the way through now. Taking my time. It's terrific, natch. Hard to talk about a book without talking about it.
Oh yeah, the second half of my book is printed about half as dark as the first half. Guess I'll have to use a reading light when I get there. That'll teach me to only check the dust jacket and covers before settling on a copy. I hope. __________ People lie with words all the time, but rarely do they lie with actions. |

About halfway through now. Had a wiggy deja vu last night, beginning to read the chapter titled ‘Tubal’ (I think that’s the title.) About two paragraphs in, I thought, ‘I’ve read this before. But how could I? I must have cheated and sneaked ahead.’ But I’m committed to not sneaking ahead in books anymore – it was a bad childhood habit I fell into, probably from reading Dickens at 11. Those divergent character paths – when I favored one character over another, I’d skip over chapters to see what happened to my favorite. Then I’d go back to where I stopped and pick up reading from there again. It was a hard habit to break.
So I started to read at the top of the chapter again and it dawned on me that as my eyes hit the words the voice echoing them in my head had a specific accent, which lead to remembering that ‘Tubal’ was the chapter Gibson read aloud at the Pasadena signing. Wotta relief. I knew I didn’t sneak ahead. But it made for a nice psychic reverb, once I figured out I wasn't going nuts. __________ People lie with words all the time, but rarely do they lie with actions. |

He also gives a shout-out to Tulpas in Count Zero. I have always thought that Rei Toei, at the end of ATP, was the direct mainifestation of that idea. |

It was also fun seeing which of the pies he "left out on the windowsill" in the blog were left verbatim in Spook Country.

yeah the little thrill of delight as you hit them. though wasn't sure how many were actually verbatim, they tended to feel different, but then they were in context this time. --------------------------------- ::We have to let go of our internal monologues. I just picked up the book this morning. I haven't been this excited to read a new book in . . . well ever. Neuromancer was the first book to actually convince me that books are worth reading, but then I sorta lost touch with Gibson's works. Then just the other week I was killing time wiating for a friend so I strolled into a book store and saw Spook Country on display. I didn't have any money to pick it up at the time, but today I finally got a copy. I love how even tho he's not writing science fiction, it still reads like science fiction somehow. Allright, enough gushing, back to work.

Spent the morning in bed reading my way past middle and into second half:
a pleasure. Thank you, WG! I love books where every word counts; it's not work-economical for the writer, not read-economical either, as you HAVE to pay careful attention BUT it's junk-word-economical (thanks, Arkan): Where the plot mechanisms are hardly noticeable, the sentences are crafted, where the setting is brought to you by selective description, each part turned over and polished from every angle, where the mind behind it is calm and likeable and so in control... that's where I like to spend my time as a reader. |

I bought the book about a month ago. I was planing to read it while treking up the appalacian mountian trail. I forgot to pack the book, but that was a good thing! you see, everything I brought with me was destroyed by rain, fire or wild animals. I start the book today and will not post again untill I finish it. Probably tomorrow am.

Yup, definitely got a buzz from the [highlight line below to read] 'silver nitrate girls' I think because we came up with so many visuals for that image. None of them what he meant, but they all briefly zipped through my head as I read the words. "...everything I brought with me was destroyed by rain, fire or wild animals." dawntreader, glad to hear you managed to miss the fire yourself. Was it a big fire? Ditto the rain, I take it? __________ People lie with words all the time, but rarely do they lie with actions. |

And I'm done, finished this morning. Took it easy, reading a few chapters a day leisurely in bed, pretty much the antithesis of how I read the last Harry Potter a month ago.
Sometimes the book I'm reading will have some interesting interstices with my life, and SC had one or two. Now I'll be off to the Spoilery forum for slice, dice and discussion. Fun! __________ People lie with words all the time, but rarely do they lie with actions. |

Hey, are you related to the phreaker named Dawn Treader, who created a unique method of hacking extenders? |

Hoping to get back into it this evening and next week as things settle down.
More familiar subject we're tackling, thus my every half-hour off shall be devoted to Spook Country, plus bedtime reading in the hotel. Can't wait! |

About half way through now, and it's really hitting its pace. I was a bit non-plussed by the early chapters, but I'm quite into it now.

Not started yet. Figure I should at least finish Pursuit of the Millenium up to the end of the heresy of the Free Spirit chapters before moving on to SC.

Trying to pace myself, after 3 days of lenghty sessions; yesterday I closed it... in disgust. The sudden realization of a certain identity pissed me off, really. In a way, soured the great pleasure all those word-constructs and ghost-art in the streets were giving me.
It's all about to end, soon, so I expect to be pleasantly surprised. |

I'll be curious as to this identity that pissed you off. If it's the one I'm thinking of... well, I asked the WG about it himself. |

So, are you all "savoring" the Gibsonian cognac? Because I've read it twice already. I'm just curious as to why the die hards are drawing it out. I assume it has with the reluctance to finish?
I myself have not the discipline, alas. |

Personally, I just find it hard to find the time to sit down and read, these days. Usually if I have time like that I spend it trying to write or draw (until the frustration makes my head explode). I've made a conscious decision lately to make time to read, which is the only reason I've gotten as far as I have.
