Sorry for the dearth of posts. With the transition to winter we have a lot of projects coming online to study the night sky. Being a tech short this year has made things a bit more difficult, but if we can get things up and running without too much difficulty in the next couple weeks, I think things might quiet down a little. Yeah right, who am I kidding? Word on the street is that some faint auroras were seen in the last 24 hours, so as it gets darker folks with decent cameras, unlike myself, should be delivering some really stunning pictures.

Where are you in relation to "New Pole Station"?

Beautiful, Earth-love inspiring imagery.

OOOooo, it starts...thank you CuspTech!

How tall are those flags? What's with the lone flag in front and the one behind?

Hey there, glad you liked the photo. There are a few more on my blog.

I took the picture from on top of the science lab where I have some projects I'm starting up for the winter. The science lab is in the B2 wing of the "New Pole Station", and what you are looking at is the "ceremonial south pole" with the flags of the signatory nations of the Antarctic Treaty surrounding it.

The flag poles are probably 6-7 feet tall. The geographic pole marker (as of 1/1/08, the ice moves 10 meters per year) is maybe 50 meters to the right of the ceremonial pole arrangement. The larger flag in the distance is an Australian flag that is flown in honor of an Aussie that died down here some years ago. The other flags are there to be used to measure the accumulation of snow in the upwind drift of the station.

OK, Metro D, that is an awesome t-shirt! The whole no transport on/off the Ice until November may require some DIY bootlegging of the design if we can figure out a silkscreen down here.

And, boogerhead, it doesn't become truly sci-fi until one small accessory is added...

Brilliant!

Tell Uncle Owen the vaporators on the North Ridge are playing up and I've gone to Toshi Station to get some parts.

(I'm going with the Tatooine interpretation of the pic)

Sorry for such a dearth of posts. Free time seems to explosively evaporate down here these days. I just went outside now that the wind is down and the moon is up and got a few pictures. This is probably the coolest of them. When the moon is down and we're in astronomical twilight, my camera just can't resolve anything. I tried, but unless it's a really bright aurora (of which we haven't had many in a while) there's not enough light for my camera (Canon PowerShot A620) to work well.

Look closely and you'll see a big, faint halo around the moon. The only other place I've seen halos like this were when I was sailing from Auckland to Easter Island on a tall ship last year. The halo only shows up when you have clouds at a certain altitude that are made of a particular type of ice crystal-so our captain informed us.

Also, she has more pics up at photo.net.
