That's precisely what I think. The Spook is in the Screen, and the TV is watching YOU...

Yeah. That happened to me, once.

That reminds me of a short story that I read for high school forensics in the mid 1980's. It was about a TV, "A Supra, the latest model" that had special channels where you could observe people in every day life. Turned out the people you were viewing all happened to own Supra's and the camera angles were from the TV's POV.

I found the story in a collection of SF short stories. Anybody know the book?

"Because it's real," I said. "Hard to explain, harder to understand."

Yeah. I'm 90% sure I *have* that story. Can't remember the title, though, nor the writer, but I'm pretty sure Harlan Ellison is in some way associated with it; he either wrote it, anthologised it, or was featured in the same anthology that it's in.

It DOES sound like something Ellison would be involved with, though I don't know the reference. I have just heard the crazy conspiracy theories about cameras in televisions.

I'd love to hear if you find it, MoM.

Last night, I tore every Ellison book I have off my shelves (I have at least twenty) and paged their tables of contents. This morning, I scrolled a list of every short story title he's written.

Haven't made the link yet. Yet. Might not be Ellison's story, either.

Next trick: Rip all my non-Ellison anthologies off the planks. But first, I gotta go run, and then I gotta go to Ikea and buy a lamp.

Okay, I got it.

Latest Feature, by Maggie Nadler, 1972.

I do own it, in an anthology called "100 Great Science Fiction Short Short Stories", compiled by Asimov, Greenberg, & Olander. Not a trace of Ellison.

Thanks! That's the one!

You could say that she predicted the whole "Reality TV" genre.

There's a copy in France, which is, I believe, in the EU part of Denmark.

I was just thinking the webcam phenomenon, too...

I like that Nil. Definitely some spooky stuff happening on that corner to the left.

this is my favourite one sofar. I like the minimalist approach and all the empty space, while it still has a very dynamic sense to it.

It's landscape format rather than portrait, but I love this shot by MoM. It'd make an awesome cover.

"It may be said with rough accuracy that there are three stages in the life of a strong people. First, it is a small power, and fights small powers. Then it is a great power, and fights great powers. Then it is a great power, and fights small powers, but pretends that they are great powers, in order to rekindle the ashes of its ancient emotion and vanity. After that, the next step is to become a small power itself."
