It's bad business whenever anyone drags the name Jean-Luc Godard into conversation, but...

Here's what I hope: I hope Gibson has written his 'Alphaville.'

Probably 99 percent of the people who post here know already, but if you don't 'Alphaville' was Godard's 1965 movie. It was science fiction, except he left out all the devices and effects.

His hero's spaceship is a Ford Galaxy, and the master computer that controls Alphaville appears to be a big fan, lit from the rear.

It's a great, maybe the great, sci-fi movie, because it makes you see fresh how strange the real world is.

Without having a clue, really, other than the two on-line excerpts I've read, I kinda think Gibson has something similiar going here - at least I hope so.

1965? I would have thought it was earlier than that by at least a year or two.

Yeah, it's a hipster touchstone. When I was but a sprout in the suburbs, I somehow came across a (self-mythologizing and evasive, but that's another story) photojournal about the band Blondie, and a picture and caption I'll never forget is:

"Robert Fripp as Lemmy Caution and Debbie as Natasha von Braun in the never-made remake of Alphaville."

They were pitch-perfect, too.
