It's also commercials, ads, constantly being inundated by the consumer culture. I find that of all the chores I hate doing, grocery shopping is the worst. I hate going through the door and being coated with sensory overload "Buy, buy, buy, buy, buy" everwhere you look. Trying to get us to buy stupid shit we don't need. It's why I haven't watched TV in 10 years, and why I've recently even stopped listening to the radio. I'm sick of the constant marketing.

That, and over-presence of religion, were two major things that Russian immigrants, myself included, were shocked by immediately after arrival. I guess, now it's less noticeable for people who went through the cultural changed there, but in 1993 it was not even a "mirror world", it was like a different genre of a world. |
