In my case, its purely based on aesthetics - his visual style doesn't appeal to me. Although I enjoy catching Picnic at Hanging Rock when its on TV.

There's no doubt Weir is a talented director, but as I mentioned above, his directorial style doesn't inspire me.

Did anyone see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? If not, do so. Now. Many of the effects in that movie jumped out at me as being very "footage-like"- in particular, the way the background of some of the scenes sort of evaporated around the characters, even while the scene was going on, and the focal point stayed on the actors. It weirded me out at first, but had an incredible impact on my unconscious mind- utterly beautiful imagery.

Imagine: A thousand Buddhist eyes staring at you from across a rice-paddy field, the zeal and hunger in their eyes. And one lifts his fist high in the air, raising the battlecry, "EMBRACE THE TAO!!!!" Then organized chaos ensues.

I love Wong Kar-Wai. Everything he touches turns to gold. But I agree with whoever said that his approach is so singular and idiosyncratic that I can't see him adapting a novel, much less an american one. Also, his particular brand of ennui is so fierce that it is actually celebratory. I think Sofia Coppola's version of his style is a lot more toned down and nebulous, that american sense of displacement, which is closer in tone to PR.
Weir, I don't know. He's great and all but honestly a little too old to make a realistic film about web culture.
Fincher could not stop himself from going nuts on the cgi (look at Panic Room, the most cgi-heavy interior piece ever).
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Aronofsky. He'd really have to tone down the hip hop montage, but he's proven he can adapt a novel, and he's less status quo than Finchmeister could dream of.
Finally, my longshot foreigner choices would be taiwanese Tsai-Ming Liang(The Hole, the ultimate urban dissafection film) and Michael Haneke (Funny Games, Code Unknown). Those dudes would be guaranteed to handle PR with the utmost delicacy and sophistication.

Its too bad Antonioni isn't still around...all the London stuff takes me back to Blow-Up...

"What's with the camera?"

Anybody seen "Code 46?" I just watched it yesterday, heart in mouth, thinking: This is it. This should be "Pattern Recognition." And I would love to see Samantha Morton as Cayce. Any takers?

Samantha Morton should never be in any movie ever again!

But I have no arguments to back this.

I'm not really partial to any directors for this yet, but I am wondering what your reactions would be to Jake Jarmusch or Darren Aronofsky?

I haven't seen Spotless Mind yet, but it looks pretty compatible to me from clips. I need to see that one.

IMDb information updated on January 13, 2006

The only new info is a planned release date in 2007 rather than 2006.

After hearing the DVD Talk Radio interview with Peter Weir, I'm not surprised.
