Hi, i'm a student at university and one of my modules is pattern recognition and neural networks, but i'm having trouble with multilayer perceptrons.

One question of my assignment (can i stress im not looking for a solution but help Smile )

there is a graph, with classification regions for class 1 and class 2.

It then asks how many inputs...outputs...etc etc would the MLP have based on this graph.

But i cant seem to find anything like this in the lecture notes / online / etc.

So i'm just looking for some help, is how the graph looks supposed to tell me how many inputs i need, or is it referring to the number of classes.

Any help would be appreciated Smile

Sorry to disappoint, but this is a forum dedicated to the author William Gibson, who wrote a novel entitled "Pattern Recognition." Some of us might be interested in what you're asking (in which case you'd want the "Random Thoughts" section), but the primary purpose of this part of the forum is discussion the novel, not your branch of computer science.

Best, Justy.

Another student wanting us to do their course work. This was a particularly inobservant one not even comprehending the nature of the WGB - usually, they just want us to analyse a book for them.

I think instead "The Future" the new forum should be "Academics beg for Wigber Expertise"

On a side note - and I hope Justy will back me up here, even though we've had some differences in the past - you're in university?

You made it to a tertiary educational institute, from which I can only assume - against my will, trust me - you passed a certain amount of secondary and primary education. Somewhere along the way, I suppose, they taught both grammar and spelling. Or were you sick all those days, or, as I am forced to deduce from your name, spent most of it behind the toilet block, painting your fingernails black and moping about how you can get your parents to hate you in order to seem more emotionally "deep" than the other fucked up degenerates in cardigans and black plastic-framed glasses you assume were friends. I'm just throwing this out there, y'know.

So how the hell did you make it to university? Considering your obvious lack of basic language skills, I'm guessing you're either fucking the dean, or acceptance into the hallowed halls of education in your locale is guaranteed by simply winning some sort of bowel movement competition. Maybe academia's getting a little too open-minded, and is offering scholarships to whoever's found lying face down on the footpath as an unfortunate victim who almost - but not quite - managed to tackle the monumental task of chewing gum and walking at the same time.

To be fair, and because I'm a lateral-thinking kind of guy, I'm also going to explore other possibilities. Maybe your keyboard's broken, perhaps cursed by the Shift Key Pixies or possessed by some unholy spirit. In which case, either see a wizard or a Catholic Priest. Better yet, start by blessing some Pepsi and pouring it over your computer. That should help. At any rate, you're gonna need a new keyboard, if you wish to actually be able to interface efficiently with a certain key piece of equipment which is at the very core of your choice of study.

Maybe you just can't type. Learn.

On the upside - it's good to end on an up note, according to the copy of that management book I found on the bus - it appears that since you clearly have no idea about the true purpose of this wide and varied forum we call the WGB, I'm again going to assume something. I assume that you simply googled "pattern recognition" and found this somewhere on page one. Congratulations. You mastered Google. You're halfway to a degree in Artificial Intelligience. Now just trying working on that "Intelligience" part.

Oh, crap, meant to end on an upnote.

Er, well, there's nothing really wrong with you that a long spell in a confined space with a running ride-on lawnmower won't fix.

To think only a couple of days ago I told someone it was hard to get flamed around here.

OK, how to get flamed on the WGB, the revised list:

1) Ask for us to do an assignment or research for you. (If you are very, very careful and make it clear that you have at least tried Google and Wikipedia before coming here, some people may take pity on you)

2) Start a thread which makes it clear that either you don't know what the topic of this forum is, or you don't care.

3) Demonstrate bad grammar or spelling with no redeeming qualities.

4) Wander into the sights of an irritable member.*

If you have something interesting to say, people may give you some leeway on item 3, but if you are invoking items 1 and 2 at the same time, well, watch out.

* coughlithoscough.

Then it is a great power, and fights small powers, but pretends that they are great powers, in order to rekindle the ashes of its ancient emotion and vanity. After that, the next step is to become a small power itself."

if you take each responce as it's own graph, then layer the graphs ,one over the other as if transparent, then look at your new graph, this will most likely resemble the theoretical graph your looking for.
