Guys... did anyone actually read the text that accompanied the pictures?
She's not saying that this outfit is the ideal CPU look. She's just saying that initially she was inspired by the idea of CPU's but got sidetracked by colorful socks, platforms, etc. She is a close reader, not sure about you guys. |

realized yesterday that i often wear CPU's.
non-labeled jeans, plain t-shirts. all black. my concession to labels is my Converse High-Tops. ~~born of cyberspace~~ Humanity's last chance for survival. the world isn't ready for me but here i am true patriot love in all our sons command |

Are they only CPUs once they've been de-branded?
If the debranding is for Cayce's benefit then it's only her recognized brand signifiers that make the difference? Is it enough to not see an external brand name? For instance there are these Carharts here: http://www.supercasuals.com/Carhartt/Carhartt_B01.cfm with those lovely rivets in them. Can you cut off the Carhartt's logo from the ass-cheek\back-pocket and then call them part of a CPU outfit? Or does the presence of the rivets make them non-generic enough? Serious question, because I'd like to start wearing nothing but these pants (in black) with the logo removed and I need WGB validation as to if they'd qualify and CPU-class clothing or not. |

i think the point of CPU's is the non-visible labels.
because WG very clearly states the brands of what she wore, just that she'd unbranded them. Levi 501's DKNY sweater Fruit of the Loom t-shirts so... yeah i think you'll be fine with those pants, label-removed. ~~born of cyberspace~~ Humanity's last chance for survival. the world isn't ready for me but here i am true patriot love in all our sons command |

Very good then, with board approval I'll purchase a seam-ripper for label removal. Thnx GR! Figure Rydell's trip to that mall in VL would have made Cayce a very happy girl? Or do I remember it wrong, the scene in my mind was very CPU oriented. Also the stuff Turner wears in Mexico in CZ sounded pretty CPU-ish to me also. |

Turner's clothes disintegrated after a few days, they weren't de-branded, they were just cheap.

no brands, if i remember correctly (and i usually do) but remember that CPU's were by definition black, grey, or white. ~~born of cyberspace~~ Humanity's last chance for survival. the world isn't ready for me but here i am true patriot love in all our sons command |

Oh sure, but then, they got them as nameless stalls on the resort town\beach, so I'd assume they came "generic" in addition to being cheap. More so tho I mean along the lines that she seemed to want clothes that associated with nothing and those beach clothes seemed to fit that product niche as well. Of course in Gibson world it's possible or perhaps even likely that those CZ beach-wear were themselves branded knock-offs of "real" clothing. Then we can wonder, is it the logo that matters to Cayce? Or the design? Would black jeans that are clearly not Levi's even tho they claim Levi's turf still need to be debranded? Or are they already debranded because they are clearly not what they say they are? Anyway, I see what you mean, but what I mean is the feel in the novel of being generic, unbranded, clothing. |

I'd thought Rydell was pretty hot on black jeans as well? I think it's the jeans that are stuck in my mind. |

My black (skinny, emo) jeans have no visible label, and black rivets.

As I recall, the essential feature of CPUs was not actually their de-brandedness, but their timelessness. Ideally it should be possible for someone to have worn a CPU at any time in the last few decades without too much comment. This is quite difficult to carry out with cheap clothes, I think, excepting perhaps jeans and a T-shirt. (But even with the jeans you would have to avoid certain fashionable cuts.)

I agree with Colin, and therefore I say that All-Stars are very very much CPUs.

As someone who went in for this aesthetic before even having the term CPU to hang off of it, this timelessness is the key. It's sort of like protective camouflage, really. I like archetypes and forms, like THE shoes when I say sneakers and THE jeans when I say jeans. Those are the things I naturally gravitate towards wearing (and using, object-wise -- I use pens and cameras, etc, that embody the essence of pen-ness and camera-ness, etc). The resulting minimalism is a side-effect and I can turn it up and down in each outfit. Anyway, I recently have taken to dressing in a timeless archetypal sense in another way: I buy old dresses. |
