I thought it was a pun on his mouthbreathing erstwhile technofans, to show that he still includes CPU's and mafia in his novels. No ninjas in the final version, however.

Yes, me too. But I was thinking of what *inspired* him to make that pun!

Just for the record, I reported Super44 -- it's not like we can't browse SG if a fix is needed

What I dig about this whole thread is that it's all about fulfillment. Gibson's entire body of work has always been a 'history of the future', and hovered at a certain cusp between tomorrow and the day after. The fact that the jacket just came in to being in response to the work of fiction is just another example of something he's been doing so well for awhile, now.

I've never been to this board, before, but I'll be damned if it doesn't possess the soul of the board in PR.

Is anyone else writing futurism fiction this well that you could recommend to me?

"No, no he didn't. Gibson is writing fiction. And in his fictitious world [though it more closely resembles ours than his other worlds] Rickson's makes black MA-1's. In fact, maybe in Gibson's fictitious world MA-1's were originally black."

says it all.
next.

I'm fascinated at how quickly the jacket has become a fetish item and Buzz Rickson's has become a "cool" brand. Ironic, no?

You are mistaken. Previously it was cool. Now it is just exclusive and geeky. Which I enjoy, but it has lost the earlier "cool".

The book has pulled a Cayce Pollard stunt, destroying the cool in the way of spreading it. And of course economically benefitting BR.

BR still keeps lots of cool. But the jackets have lost most of it.

In the name of God, man -- THIS MEANS SOMETHING.

Old quote, yes, but I haven't seen this mentioned yet: What if 'Parkaboy' is a play on where he is from, Chicago. As a twist of the real meaning of the 'Windy City' he might be using 'Parkaboy' as a handle to show that he is both young and protected from most of the heavy windage going on. This is pretty clear when he goes into the debates with Mama.

For those out of the know, the windy of the 'Windy City' does not refer to the wind in the air, but rather the wind from the mouths of politicians pontificating on the subject of the moment.

It's quite an exclusive label. Most of the other jackets are in that price range too.

Hi Folks;

In the UK, the black MA-1 is the preferred wear of club "security staff" (bouncers), usually barrel shaped guys with buzz cuts and more than the odd tatoo.

I have been buying stuf from Ricksons for years (and their associated label Sun Surf) as I spend a lot of time in Japan. And I picked up one of the first PR Jackets when there about 18 months ago.

2 Months ago I was driving in London & was about to reverse into a parking space when some bozo comes along & tries to drive forward into the same spot. It was a stand off, he blows his horn at me & I remonstrate through my window. After a moment he gets out of his car & walks towards my car. I get out of mine, he suddenly sees my black MA-1, assumes I am a "hard man"; throws his hands up in submission & says "I don't want any trouble; I'm going" and walks back to his car.

I am a 55 year old writer, and look as unlike a bouncer as it is possible to do; but the subtext of the jacket over rode reality.

Keep your heads down
