I'm not really a brand-o-phobe so to speak--I just don't like them- don't wear them if I can help it and usually can--other wise I am just buying practical-tho it is funny when I am so of the seat on that that I don't even know one when I see it--
I saw and interesting play of shapes once and was enamoured for a whole five minutes--I moved further in and saw the image appear every where in herds and droves--Funny how that shorts out my interest--(forgive my spelling)

It's a bad recording-

Since you are the Fashionpolice why haven't you pointed out that 501s are so old and that you need Wrangler 936s to be cool

What are you doing, trying to make the brand-o-phobes run screaming?

501s are so old that the vintage ones are still cool! I've got a reproduction pair with the arcuates painted on the back pockets rather than stitched!

If you really want to be cool you need to get Sugarcane Denim! Sorghum jeans is where it is at!

Oh dear... In order to be cool jeans have to be mass market. Repro antique and limited distribution smacks of desperation

Or maybe you could disregard the idea that the number printed on your pants has any special significance... that could work.

And why is that? Coolness requires exclusivity, which is why coolhunters destroy the cool they uncover.

Of course what is exclusive to some, is commonplace to someone else. So cool is localized, geographical, demographic.

But never mass market, unless you live outside that market (Levi's in Russia in the seventies come to mind).

Names. Numbers. Held as though they might be a map, a map back out of the underground.

The point to coolness is precise selection NOT exclusivity, by that measure only the super rich could be cool when clearly none of them are.

You don't need to be über-rich to have exclusive anything. DIY!!!

Some of us still know how to use our brains and hands.
(What could be cooler than a French Hotdog costume?)

I've yet to meet anyone who could build a Bell and Ross watch at home! Almost anything is cooler than a hot dog costume!

Most rich people are cool, you just do not see them in the TV, as that is anticool. Believe me. But they are cool in their own demographic, which most likely does not include you.

And what is precise selection, but exclusivity? Something only a few can achieve. The rest just have to buy a readymade off the shelf, forced to believe the spin from the marketing guys.

And price has little to do in this post-location world.

But if you want to believe your favorite brands and models are cool, you can always be another limited demographic.

That is the best aspect of cool, that it is always relative.

Take the Buzz Rickson's. Cool to some, commonplace and unremarkable to many (just a bomber jacket...), a symbol to attack for some (hey, a skinhead!).

Perceived exclusivity in the demographic is a must, but not enough. Which is why some people will be cooler than others. You need the eye for it.

Exclusivity can be achieved in many ways. Using your father's dress jacket with a black t-shirt was cool the first times, because few young people considered jackets as wearable implements.

And some people here consider hot dogs suits (or rather, wearing them with style) over-cool.

The numbers are merely pointers to the shape. Remember the map is not the territory

I have friends on the Times Rich List and unfortunately most are not cool and those of us that saw Buddy Holly live have been cool for longer than some have been alive (i'm waiting for the first responce to point out that that last statement is not cool!)

If you don't mind my asking, who are you, that name/brand drops Wrangler 936s and Bell&Ross (and actually seems to be upset at the idea of someone wearing a hotdot costume)?
