If you expect him to do dialogue, then don't hire him. It's like hiring a one-legged actor to play Tarzan (obscure UK comedy reference)

Well, Tarzan is a role traditionally associated with a two-legged artiste.

I have nothing against his left leg. The trouble is... neither has he.

I'd like to cast DoP (Director of Photography) -- Christopher Doyle. His style of cinematography is perfect for PR.

The only casting I can think of is William Gibson to make his acting debut as Win Pollard. The rest I'd like unknowns, or a pleasant surprise. Maybe a young Neil Gaiman as Parkaboy, they can CGI the grey out of his hair.

As for Soundtrack, a mix between the Lost In Translation soundtrack, and U2 catching up with Brian Eno and reliving their Zooropa/Passengers days.

Hi, I'm new here. I hope to stick around and have fun discussing Gibson, the future, and everything inbetween.

I only just noticed the Public Relations reference in Pattern Recognition (PR) too, so don't expect lightning flashes of insight from me, I'm a wee bit slow but I'll do my best.

... Joaquin could pull off a young Tommy Lee Jones for Rydell ...

Er ... doesn't he look a little too sure of himself for Rydell?

He didn't look sure of anything in 'Signs'.
It works for me.

Fair point, but ...... I dunno - it just isn't working for me.

Let me try my argument this way. The candidates suggested so far strike me as good movie stars who LOOK like movie stars. Now consider Rydell - does HE look like a movie star?

Yes, Rydell looks like a young Tommy Lee Jones.
That's a fact.

But I see your point :
Ideally, the actors should not be famous.

But it's more fun to make our picks in the same pool of 'movie stars' we all know.
Picking unknown people wouldn't allow us to discuss their acting abilities.

ArkanGL

Maybe I'm unaware of something obvious here, and should have had much closer look at previous posts ('wouldn't be the first time).

Is there a piece of evidence links his appearance with TLJ?

Hello Moonage,

The comparison to TLJ comes from Virtual Light, when Freddie, Warbaby's assistant says he ran Rydell through the Separated at Birth program, which was (normallly) used to identify missing persons (pg. 94 in my paperback copy) . The resemblance is also noted in All Tomorrow's Parties (pg. 103, paperback copy).

There may be other references, but those are probably the most obvious.

Hope that clears things up.

Yeah, thanks Konrad - I remembered this the instant I dispatched the post. Bad Boardmanship on my part here.

There is an interesting thing going on, though, which has happened in similar exchanges re other WG characters: it seems that my intuitive picture of major characters throughout the novels seems always to be much older than is actually the case.

Thanks for the reply - and happy new year.

Owen Wilson as Sublet? Yes. Perfect.

Rydell is difficult. I've tried to get my wife to read VR twice, and each time she's gotten to the "Rydell looks for a job and goes to interview at Nightmare Folk Art," put the book down and said,"Is he supposed to be retarded?" Which made me think,"Hmm. No. Not retarded. Rydell's a Good-Ole-Boy!" Sort of a young Michael Rooker, a young David Keith, and yes, a young Tommy Lee Jones. And I'm hard pressed to think of a current, young actor who can fit that bill. Heath Ledger?

Oh, and in a tip of the hat to the thread here, I kind of like Samantha Morton as Cayce. I've mentioned this on another thread, but I think redundant threads are just fine.
