I was surprised to see Pamela reappear in Spook Country, full of beans and Q-like as ever, and especially pleased to see how Hollis reacted to her offers of Bondian gadgetry in a wholly opposite fashion to our Cayce. What i am even more surprised about, re-reading Pattern Recognition this week, is that Bigend specifically says that Pamela Mainwaring is "no longer with us" during the meeting at Blue Ant at which Dorotea, Boone and Bigend all lay their cards out on the table in Chapter 24 of PR. Seems that there is some discrepancy regarding her employment status with Blue Ant after that meeting. Am i missing something or are we looking at a plot hole/mistake on the part of the man WG?

i can't remember whether it was her or bigend, but i'm sure one of them made a comment about how she had left the company, but been brought back into work in new offices.

she is a good character, it would almost be interesting to see her get a bigger part in a next novel, but it seems unlikely, she has to much of a turn up/act/disappear role so far.

Aye, but there's no reason for her not to be a central protagonist in the next one. She's in a uniquely pivotal position and she is a woman and she is, as Bigend said, "game".

She could be great fun.

Mainwaring is a conniving little bitxh like Dorotea, Bigend's kind of conniving little bitch. So he brought her back on of course.

I believe the phrase you're looking for is "a vicious lying cunt".

I hope you are all pronouncing her name correctly. It is Mainwaring, as in "Don't tell him Pike".

Greatest moment of Dad's Army ever!

I suppose Bigend must have brought her back to Blue Ant because Dorotea says "She was easy" - from which we infer that Mainwaring was coerced in some way.

I showed my girlfriend this thread a couple of days ago and explained who Pamela was and she was like "I know who Pamela is, thank you. I have read Pattern Recognition twice, after all." And i replied "Ah! But i bet you didn't know it's pronounced [like as in Dad's Army]" and she admitted that no, indeed she didn't know that.

I refuse to spell it out phonetically- it will be our secret. No-one would ever think of googling it, right?

Google isn't helping me. I'm tired. throw me a bone here. How does one pronounce it?
