I heard a few years ago that flotsam flip flops (thongs to those of you down under) get seperated due to their mirror image shapes. If a container load went overboard, the left hand ones would all head one way while the right hand ones would all go another.

Interesting, but I couldn't come up with a catchy description.

I once heard that shoes were shipped separately, because it makes it harder to steal them when they are in different containers.

And I heard once that the top layer of containers is stacked lightly so that it will go overboard in heavy weather to take away some of the strain. It does sound a bit made up though.

A past Harper's article had a fascinating account of the long journeys and dead-ends that spilled cargo undergo in the high seas.
