I have never been very good at imagining Neuromancer done right in anything but an animation. Even so, I've never given much thought to who should be the cast, or I suppose in my particular case, voice cast. Nonetheless, I'll take a whack at live action.

I recognize Cilian, and he would be a very good Case.

I haven't seen a good Molly idea yet. All of them have been too pretty (or in the case of that one with the stupid hair, just juvenile and annoying) I never imagined Molly as particularly pretty - pleasant, yes, but what always took precidence was BAMFness. Carrie Ann Moss as Molly is apalling.(Plus, Molly could completely pwn Trinity any day of the week, and on valium).
This is not a 'serious' suggestion really, but spurred by some earlier conversation, Molly as asian would be perfect for Zhang Ziyi.

Bruce Willis as Armitage is interesting, it could even work, but Bruce is too recognizable (and a little on the time ravished side) Viggo Mortensen could work. He's pretty recognizable too, but has those dead eyes of his. [Voice: Jay Franke ala JC Denton DX1]

3Jane - Fairuza Balk if she could take off her friggin makeup for a second.

Wayne Pygram for Ashpool would be awesome, but David Bowie would be more awesome.

Daniel Craig for Deane would be cool, and he could also pull off Armitage now that I'm thinking of it.

Dixie - I imagined the voice and likeness of Randy Quaid almost as soon as he started speaking.

Maelcum - Eddy Grant, if he can act.

My first read through Neuro, my cast was

Case: Joseph Fiennes
Lonny Zone: Benicio Del Toro
Julie Deane: Derek Jacobi
Armitage: Dolph Lundgren
McCoy Pauley: Tom Sizemore
Ashpool: Richard Harris

Later I fixed on Shirley Manson as Molly, and I would hear "Push It" in my head in the scene where Molly kicks the door down on Riviera and 3Jane. On a German board, someone proposed Avery Brooks as Armitage, an unusual choice, but I like it. Max Von Sydow's also a good alternate for Ashpool.

I’ve been trying to think of a better actor to play Case than the current rumor indicates, but am having trouble.

I guess it goes back to getting the right tone of sympathy to begin with, then doing something with it on the screen. What makes it hard for me is that I don’t think of Case as being particularly good looking. But I know the way Hollywood is - even characters which aren’t beautiful are beautiful. That’s part of the magic. And I have trouble making that jump, which is why I come up empty trying to think of actors who could be Case.

I have a worse problem with Molly. I hope for someone who fits the description. But the important part is, if the actress has half a second on screen, can she make her role work with just an expression, opposite 3Jane’s line from the book: “Would you?” 3Jane asked, her voice a child’s. “I think you would.” With that look, I don’t care if the actress is even unknown. Perhaps being unknown would even be better.

joe/joseph gilgun was in 'this is england' as woody. saw the flick the other night. so he's good looking as far as i'm concerned, but not dreamboat like someone like cilian murphy, and he's 1984 born. so right now, he's the perfect age.

oh sorry. yep him as case.

That's the best bit of casting I've heard yet.

Also am intrigued by misty's idea for Case. There is a young Gibson quality to that actor. Though Bill has a much stronger chin then Gilgun.

Just for fun (I cannot for the life of me picture the movie really being Neuromancer):

The biggest problem IMO is Molly, than Case. The Rest should be built around them.

Look, Case is 24, right? Yet he has already killed 3 people, without hesitation, just to keep his head above water. Then add the despair of: I'm 24 and I'm in prison (his body) for the rest of my life <- Case is suicidal, remember?

Meaning that at age 24 (ruling out Edward Norton, who COULD MAYBE play Case), he has experienced more than any of us can imagine. I'd pick a Moskovian Street kid for that role, but no Hollywood actor <- They just could not imagine it, no matter how good they are.

Anybody seen turkish/german movie 'Gegen die Wand'? There's a scene where a girl, upon hearing that her plan to escape her tyranic father (by marrying a bum) won't fly, grabs a bottle, bust the bottom, rips open her arm. All in one swift, elegant movement. Instantly, determined. And the split second (!) before she was sitting in the Bar, smiling gently.
Blew me out of my chair, that girl. That determination, that speed was scary!

Now THAT would be the kind of action that Case (the one Molly sees as 'Born to run away', remeber?) should at least LOOK like being capable of.

And now imagine what kind of Molly you'd need ...
Body -> she's described as looking like a dancer, no problem.
Face -> I liked the old Neuromancer cover with that girl's face in silver, but honestly, I think face don't matter too much, partly because the Lenses will make any good looking girl a tad bit scary.

The thing is what her body language should look like, right?
She'd have to be punk like Case (lost her man recently, rember?), but with years of combat training, she'd have to be a bit Samurai, you'd have to believe her that she goes after Hideo because 'they're the best'.
And Molly also is sort of on her way down, she knows the Job goes to shit, yet doesn't get off.

And last not least:
I've never pictured Molly as Sociopath (as was indicated in Mona Lisa Overdrive), she don't see people as things, would make her a crap fighter I think, she couldn't figure out Riviera and Case the way she does.
But:
She IS just a tiny little bid scary, no?
She's not really afraid to get her hands dirty so to speak, literally.

I don't see ANY Hollywood actress look like that, that 'Back against the wall', state of the martial art (tuned!) fighter, calm Samurai, a hint of crazy (!) killer, also a bit suicidal and then looking as if that was normal, like she didn't know anything else.

The major issue for me with Molly would be not appearance so much as demeanor. Most women who get elected to play "badass" roles usually...act like they are badasses, but I've always though Molly was so good she was beyond a need to impress other people. She doesn't need to act like a badass and in fact would just attract the wrong kind of attention that way. Finding an actress who could pull that off...tricky.

Diane Venora is too old now. Sadly.

Because that's the other part, while Molly is youngish in the book, the weight of her life-experience have never made her seem young (well, maybe a lil bit in Johnny M) and finding an actress who can pull that off would be tricky.

I figure finding somebody that looks enough like her would be easy, but they'd all act like they were hardened mil-spec tough girls. Where as Molly KNOWS exactly where she ranks, and doesn't have to "act" like anything. I figure she comes off more like a single mom that loves to go dancing. Mostly it's work, but...there are occasional fun parts.

This is a very good list. I am leery of Sossaman and Leguizamo though. But still, a great list.

honestly this stuff is all great. I need way more references (I'm a life artist so its more preferable to draw from references rather than from off the top of my head)

I've read that Hayden Christensen will star as Case. Excellent choice I think.
