my two cents:

Whether the argument/rant is real or not, the points made still don't make me feel any happier about this guy directing the movie. Prior to the announcement that Kahn was directing NEUROMANCER, he hadn't even shown up on my radar. I don't give a fuck who directs Brittney Spears videos unless it's someone really off kilter, like Tarantino because then everyone would be like, WTF mate? And TORQUE, I saw the trailer and thought, wow, FAST and FURIOUS on motorcycles, what a steaming pile of shit that's going to be.... Keep in mind I've never sat through either movie so they might actually be brilliant excursions into the depths of what is possible in cinema. I can't actually know until I watch them. Then again chopping people up into small pieces for a stew and wearing their flesh as a mask whilst I dance under the moon might be the greatest single experience one can have in this life; doesn't mean I'm going to subject myself to either endeavor.....

Anyways, this guy's main point seems to be that he is willing to work in the Hollywood system by sucking whoever's dick needs sucked and bend over for a mass gangbang from the executive producers and we all know that's exactly what makes great cinema. I mean I sympathize, it probably is really difficult to concentrate on an already gargantuan task of filming all the coverage needed for a feature when you're constantly getting ass-reamed or having your throat blocked so often you can't consume the required amount of caffeine to concentrate on the job. We should have complete confidence that he will do NEUROMANCER justice because he knows why TORQUE didn't turn out the way he wanted it and when the movie sucks he and we can always blame the studio system.

OK, maybe I'm being a bit harsh here. Actually I'm just having a bit of fun. People who use Michael Bay as a reference of highly respected directors amuse me. It would be difficult to take anything this guy says serious after that....

When I heard this guy was directing the film adapatation of one of my favorite pieces of literary media I immediately asked myself, who the fuck is this guy? Brittney Spears and TORQUE dude? WTF? Track record is not very impressive, I mean it does not scream out "NEUROMANCER is going to ROCK!!!!!" It actually made a small part of my soul sit in a corner and weep. Contrast this with the news of Chris Cunningham first being attached to the project oh so many years ago. My soul actually did the happy. I imagine it would do the same if someone like Fincher or even one of the Scott brothers (neither one would really be choice for me, but still, I would have a level of confidence in them....)

I'm not saying we shouldn't give this guy the benefit of the doubt. If he can make an awesome movie then I'm gonna be standing in line. It's real fucking simple; I like good movies. I want more people to make more good movies. I don't want to waste a lot of time being bitter over something that's so out of my control. If the movie sucks I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. I'll just be mildly pissed everytime someone asks me to list favorite novels and I mention NEUROMANCER and they go "Oh that movie sucked...."

It seems to have 5 discs, including Ridley Scott's "Final Cut" on the first one...which sounds like the long awaited SE to me...

As for the Neuromancer film, I can see it continuing to languish in it's current development hell for a bit longer or appearing in a very different form to the book. The former due to it not attracting enough money to be pushed far enough and the latter if it does attract enough money, as it will be changed to accommodate the masses.

Either way, as with most moves between media, fans who can't seperate the two will be upset. I would claim that I am above all that and can always seperate a book from its film version, but I can't bring myself to read the Bourne books, so I won't.

dvdactive site was describing it as just "restored and remastered"... but according to amazon it seems to be the SE, although I'm shocked that the Brmovie site hasn't be updated...

I wonder how much of it is Mr Scott and how much is the studio/distribution company/whatever rubbing its little hands together with glee as the 30th anniversary rolls around.

That said, it may be just that I don't hang around in the right places, but I haven't heard so much of the "leave it alone..." as I did when the newest cuts of Star Wars came out - is Ridley Scott allowed one more do-over as his last one was so very long ago?

I've preordered the shiny case thing, but that is because I am a sad fanboy who likes shiny things. The workprint also interests me.

Actually, according to this site http://www.brmovie.com/ (which you should check out) Ridley Scott was not so happy with the director's cut because at the time he did it he was missing time and material from the movie.
A few year later, he was ready to do another cut but due to some legal issues, it was impossible... until now it seems.

Kahn's response is real. It was actually originally posted on his Myspace blog, so I added him as a friend to check it out. It's the same, word for word:

I have to say.... I really don't care if there is a movie. For a start it's so long since the book was written and so many others have taken aspects of Gibson's ideas and imagry that the film will look like a rip-off whatever happens. It's all been done already. Badly- but it's been done. Secondly there are so few decent film versions of books that you know that it would be disapointing whoever made it. They're not going to do a Lord of the Rings on it are they?

I've been a fan of sci-fi since I was a little kid and I'm in my 40's now. The other day I was stuggling to come up with a list of ten decent science fiction films... I really couldn't come up with that many. On the whole books are a much more satisfying medium than film for sci-fi (actually tv is better than film as it gives you more time to develop things). It's a great book and that's how it should be left in my view.

I have to agree with djd, altho I do feel that a Neuromancer flick could work, it would just have to be very different from the book to work on film and for those of us who've read the book it just won't be satisfying.

I have to agree with 'djd': most of Neuromancer ideas have been used in other works (good and bad ones). I guess that if someone wants a movie with the "signature" of WG, the best thing to do is to hire him to write a completely new script.

We have to take into account that Hollywood deals with the masses. Concepts like the ones expressed in "Matrix" could only be merchandised (with great success) because W.Brothers were very smart in inserting them into frenetic rhythm and hallucinating visual effects. But adapting Neuromancer now would be something like a breed of Isaac Asimov and W.Brothers... at the risk of winding up like David Lynch's Dune (argh...).

I really liked it. But I saw it without having read the book. It was introduced to me by a friend who had read it and then saw the movie. Before watching it, I was aware of the movie, and I knew it was based on a book, but for some reason I never watched it. I think I was turned off by it's non-conventional sci-fi look. Anyway, he made me watch it and my first impression was how could that movie have escaped my radar. I had no idea it was such an epic story, i just thought it would be cheezy sci-fi at best. He filled me in on some bits and pieces that were either missing from the movie, changed, or added saying the book was way better of course but it's a pretty good adaptation none the less.

I am in the middle of reading Dune for the first time right now as a matter of fact and enjoying it thoroughly. It's been a few years since I watched the movie so I've managed to be able to read most of it without visualizing the movie. Altho some of the characters seem to fit so well with the actors that I've allowed thier faces to remain as I read, like Dr. Yueh and Kynes.

I thought that Dune was ok... Not great but watchable... The list of my own favourites would be (in no order) Outland, Aliens, Bladerunner, Empire Strikes Back, The Fifth Element... starting to struggle .... Alien, Total Recall, Serenity, Terminator, Tweleve Monkeys, Logan's Run, Dark Star...

I could reel off a list of sci-fi books I love much easier! Film is just too damn short to deal with creating a new world and telling a decent story in my opinion...
