quote: Me too. Welcome. Relax. quote: I hope that most of the posters around here aren't going to get upset over something like that. It's not like any of our lives depend on Neuromancer becoming exactly the film we envision (good thing too, since each of us has a different, probably incompatible, vision). No need to get one's panties in a knot if someone comes out and says that maybe, just maybe, Hollywood could do a good version. (Although I'm not actually sure anyone said that...) And by the way Night City is between Chiba and Tokyo, I think. |

I concur on Russel Crowe as Armitage. I also think Jude Law would be ideal for Case.
And yes, I'll admit it, I said it, Today it is possible. |

Well, I'll never be hollywood.
I may end up working for them, at some point, films need distribution. But I, as a director, will never do a movie where I don't have full license to do what I want. I'll never be hollywood. I know I sounded pretentious, but it's been a dream of mine to do for five years. Probably longer for some of you. But I've got some shit in my head thats gonna go places; at least in cult movie circles. I hope. Brooks is one of the best film schools on the planet. one of my teachers has won seven academy awards. Anyway, Im being a braggart now, sorry. But I was just saying I made alot of the same character choices without reading the thread, sheesh. love gavin. x fuckin' o. edit: on the anime discussion front; it would be the perfect medium for it. Shinchiro Watanabe would have to do it. The only director who could, in my opinion. Just watch Detective Story, on The Animatrix. Then think about a full length movie with that style (without the cat) and in color. It would work. Truth is, I'd rather it would be live action too. Much rather. But Watanabe could do it. And it would rock. Having anime-like CG in that beach scene would work. Or possibly a computer enhanced spliced of actual anime cel paper animation and live action. if they could do that right with the right cg filters or something, it would look really cool. ____________________________ the dreams came on in the japanese night like livewire voodoo... |

That's what I thought until a bunch of my nerd friends told me it was here.
All I can think of is that if the Sprawl is all of America, and Tokyo has grown like insane amounts... that technically Ninsei / Night City is halfway in between. I never had the chance to ask my friends why it was. Maybe they were think of the wrong books. Not sure. I don't get it either. In the book its between the ports and the arcologies at the coast on the bay and Chiba-ken. Tokyo is across the bay or you have to go around, I think. ____________________________ the dreams came on in the japanese night like livewire voodoo... |

The Night City of Neuromancer is by Tokyo.
quote: Your nerd friends probably were thinking of R. Talsorian's game Cyberpunk, that featured an imaginary city called Night City in California, in the divide between Northern and Southern California, some 100 miles south of Monterey. Returning to the thread at hand, I think we should be talking of Garage Kubrick and internet underground publishing if someone wants to make Neuromancer before we are dead. All that talk is useless, except as entertainment, as no agreement is possible in the cast of the mind. Retired |

I like the idea of an underground version of NEUROMANCER. And I want to say it is even possible, since I am often tempted to just write my own script and go shoot the fucker, copyright be damned. I've spent more time than I probably should thinking about the many different ways it could be adapted, especially lowbudget underground guerilla style.
Basically the BEST reason to NOT do it this way I can think of is when you weigh the potential legal headache of a faithful adaptation versus just making something heavily influenced by the book. It just seems to me so much easier to just do something original when you are working at the lowbudget undeground level because it's already difficult enough to create something when you are working with practically nothing. Then you don't have this weight over your head of committing an illegal act and can concentrate all your focus on your production. Of course the part of me that responded to cyberpunk in the first place says SCREW THAT NOISE, JUST SHOOT THE FUCKER... ____________________ "We must always be disturbed by the truth." ~Dogen "This space went away from blank deliberately." - the babelizer |

i like the idea of jake gylenhall (sorry spelling) as case. he needs to be early twenties.
as for rusty as armitage, i always had the impression that he was generically handsome because they'd had to totally redo his face. just with the crazy eyes. and winona, like keanu, should stay away. |

quote: WG checks the set out... Hey. Uh, guys. Anyone seen my Buzz Rickson? That big bomber jacket thingummy I was wearing? I put it down over here, by the sound guy. Yeah, sorry, Jake, I put it down next to Jake here. Got my name on it. Got W. Gibson written on it. Under the collar. Only took it off about five minutes ago. C'mon, please, I need it back. It's getting cold. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

You do realise that we're probably gonna see the Neuromancer porno before anything else...

I think Spielberg would make the ending of Neuromancer way to happy, he will just try and make it some kind of feel good movie.

quote: Thanks for clarifying that. I had no idea. I always thought about doing the screenplay and filming it and just keeping it under wraps, until i had permission. then again, i didn't know all about copywright laws and what can happen back then, (the matrix lawsuit, anyone hear about that?) so maybe it'll have to wait till after school. but whatever. if it never happens, i still have one in the works thats cyberpunk without being too much like anything Gibson, Sterling, Stephenson, or Matrix, or Equilibrium. And the main character is actually japanese. ____________________________ the dreams came on in the japanese night like livewire voodoo... |

quote: No anyone but Winona Ryder, I would probably boycot the movie due to that fact, I hate her with such a passion, she plays the same character in every movie she is in. Besides I view Linda Lee as being younger than Ryder. I would say a girl ages 18-22. I can't really put anyone specific in the role really. Which is why I stand by my Independent Film actress claim. |

The big three movie producing cities in the USA are Hollywood,CA (LA), New York City, NY, and Austin, TX. New Rose Hotel was mainly a New York product from what I recall reading in interviews with Abel Ferrara. Despite a few insert shots to establish location, it was all shot in NYC too. The magic of editing.

Funny, I recommended Jake Gyllenhaal as Case before I read this thread, but it is good to see that some people agree with me. Or I agree with them.
Linda Lee - Rachel Lee Cook The Finn - Joe Pantolanio Armitage - Yeah, Russell Crowe would rock Flatline - I'd like to see Christopher Walken but he is probably too old for this part. Molly - ??? Hard to say, I always imagined her to look like Trinity, but obviously having Carie Ann Moss playing both parts would suck. Eliza Dushku maybe? edit: Someone on the board said Kate Beckinsale in Underworld mode as Molly. I like it. |

That's about my fav. Animatrix clip. I love the feel of it, but I'm not positive it would be right for Neuromancer. Color would surely make it a more modern style, na dthe cat was a little overboard too, I think. If they'd have left the cat tossing the detective his hat out of the short, it'd be durn near perfect.
