saw it last week, i felt WG's influence too. samantha morton as cayce? sure. perhaps even as molly? in the special features doco attached to code 46 samantha morton says she doesn't act, she "re-acts". could work as cayce then or fall terribly short. generally though code 46 had a major problem in tim robbins though. |

I nearly picked this one up at the video shop tonight. Did it get theatrical release here? I can't recall hearing anything about it.

Theatrical release in Australia? Couldn't say. I know it was here in St. Louis for about a day and wasn't promoted much at all (I remember seeing a print ad for it.)Definitely worth a look. By all means not a Great movie,(there are, after all, many holes in the plot)but a really good one that floated around in my head for many weeks after viewing.
Misty: yeah, Tim Robbins . . . I didn't think he was terrible, but I really haven't seen him in much else and therefore lack any "Tim Robbins baggage." He actually seemed to me to convey a WG-ness with his glasses and up-do. Especially him riding in backs of cars in the beginning, reminded me of "No Maps for these Territories." Morton as Molly? Sure! Send her to Yuen Wo Ping school for many months before filming . . . _________________________________________________________ * * * |

gromit: david and margaret reviewed it, but not too long ago at all so its run must have been very short. i grabbed it last week largely because i was surprised to see it at the video shop so soon. grab it when there's nothing else, you know?

I was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer this morning and you know it might sound a bit odd but I think that Seth Green the guy that played Oz might just make a pretty good Case.

Cast:
Case: I always kind of picture Edward Norton here. He's skinny, and he can do cynical pretty well. Teah would be a neat choice, but I'm not sure he does English. Molly: I don't really know. Not Angelina Jolie. That's all I really require at this point. Armitage: Michaels Ironside. He is always the face I have seen in this role. Dixie: Jason Lee. He doesn't have a southern accent, but he could do the humour justice. Deane: Carl Reiner looks the way I imagine him, but I don't know much about his acting. 3Jane: Kate Moss, because she only looks mostly human. Riviera: Johnny Lee Miller, cause he's kinda handsome, kinda smarmy, and we know he can do a junkie role. Hideo: Tadanobu Asano, I think. I'm not sure that's his name, but I think it is. The blond lead in Ichi the Killer, though Hideo shouldn't be blond. Crew: Director: I dunno. I like Takashi Miike, but he's not necessarily consistently good, so it would make me nervous. Music: Billy Idol. Just kidding, I'd love to see Trent Reznor do it. Or possibly the Dust Brothers, who did music for Fight Club. |

ehh . . . I dunno. I think the tendency is to make Molly an obvious model-type hottie. I'm seeing her as a bit tougher than that. She's street samurai, y'know? Yesterday I heard Sarah Silverman on NPR and something just clicked. . . . . _________________________________________________________ * * * |

What about Darryl Hannah as molly? I just re-watched Kill Bill, and she seems suitably badass, she's a good actress, and she's pretty without looking too model-ish.

i'm not too keen on daryl hannah, i think she's getting a bit too old too, esp. if there'd be any period of time between making neuromancer and MLO.
sophie ellis bextor is model gorgeous, but a bit sly. if you haven't seen the vid for 'murder on the dance floor', check this (lorez) version online link to page, scroll down to murder vid |

IMHO it should never happen.
Those who really want to see a film made are generally all on these forums anyway and have read the book. However... and there usually is an 'however' with me... if you really are going to do it:
Sorry, if you don't know them, look them up. ~The future arrived yesterday. Where were you?~ |

I think with a little tweaking a Neuromancer film could work.
Case - Hugh Jackman Molly - Fairuza Baulk Armitage - Clancy Brown (Imagine that voice!) Riviera - Joacquin Phoenix (Something about his eyes has ALWAYS freaked me out!) Dixie Flatline - John DiMaggio (Voice of Bender, imagine that voice when he laughs!) 3Jane - Christina Ricci I haven't nailed down the other parts yet, these were the ones that were dead certs in my head. |

I have final figured out who would make a good Molly Eliza Dushku.

I'm not sure making this movie would be a great idea, but that doesn't keep me from wondering about it. I often fell unconfortable with suggestions for the role of Molly, but I gotta give it up to Nilcypher: Fairuza Baulk might not be an obvious cast, yet I can totally see her in this role, unlike most suggestions here.
Also, I think that Johnny Lee Miller as Riviera could be awesome (this was from number302079(?)) |

To me, there's not much "tweaking" that neeed be done at all. Tell the story the books told.
I've moved from Milla Jovovich for Molly to Hillary Swank. As someone said, not a model-type...I'm not sure many characters in the book oughtbe glamourous, other than Tally and, eventually, Angie (but even Angie should possess a look about her that revelas that she is split between a vapid celebrity world and the gritty world brought into sharp relief in the Sprawl novels, particualrly as we imagine Newmark experiencing it)... The most significant criteria for me will be "can they act?" If so, HOW capabily can they act? And how much focus is on the performances by any group coming together for this project. The best movies are remembered not for their effects, but for the performances of the humans that inhabit any world on screen (my second-degree argument against the so-called LOTR films, after the rape of Tolkien's characters...the acting - excepting Otto - was just terrible...). GODFATHER, KANE, SHAWSHANK etc... Focus on the acting, and on simply making the environment in which the acting takes place credible/forgotten, like a good referee. With the cyberspatial sequences, that's going to be very hard to do. Conversely, there are also scenes that, if you are staying true to the book, MUST be told with the background, and not just with language (the Chinese virus merging with the ice, etc..)...but if you have no actors SELLING all of this, and only effects, it will fail. If you fail with the effects, but have great acting, it will still succeed. The best package brings both to the table, but you must begin with solid actors. I'm thinking actors who can "inhabit" these characters as Gibson wrote them. With acting capability paramount, now, in my mind, I still think Edward Norton for Case, and... Edward Norton as Case Zhou Xun as Linda Lee Hillary Swank as Molly Danny DeVito as the Finn Mickey Rourke as Wage Nick Cannon as Lonny Zone Jonathan Ke Quan as Shin Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of Snake Man Jeff Anderson as Larry Aishwairya Rai as Dr. Virginia Rambali Eric Cantona as Terzibashjian Philippe Nahon as Ratz James Michael Taylor as Kurt Vincent Gallo as Armitage Bill Smitrovich as Smith Sajan Bhagat as Jimmy Robert Downey Jr. as Riviera Sorimachi Takashi as Hideo Calvin Lockhart as an Elder of Zion Djimon Honsou as Maelcum Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter as Aerol Max Von Sydow as Ashpool Isabelle Huppert as Marie-France Tessier Mary-Louise Parker as 3Jane Simon Callow as Julius Deane Leo Fitzpatrick as Lupus Yonderboy Kieran Culkin as Angelo Me as the Modern's link man Billy Bob Thornton as voice of McCoy Pauley Tilda Swinton as the voice of Wintermute Vincent Cassel, Monica Belucci and Daniel Auteuil as Roland, Pierre and Michele from Turing Keanu Reeves as Johnny in Molly flashback... and while we're at it... Michael Biehn as Turner the Olsen twins in their breakout adult roles, as brunettes Angie Mitchell/Mona (can they act? I don't know...I'm reaching here...but) Thomas Ian Nicholas as Bobby Newmark Gary Busey as Conroy Michael Clarke Duncan as Lucas Roger Guenveur Smith as Beauvoir All along this road not a single soul – only autumn evening comes -Basho |

If Nick Cannon is in Neuromancer, I'll go sabotage the shoot myself. Besides that, good cast. No Thomas Ian Nicholas allowed either, though.

I always saw Molly as a brunette, and besides she's a martial arts "street samurai" type.
How about Lucy Liu (since we're not bound by budget here)? With the eye implants she wouldn't be so obviously asian. Danny DeVito as the Finn??? C'mon. He's supposed to be small, rat-like, decrepit (and thin?). Nobody comes to mind especially but I imagine more like a shrunken version of William S. Burroughs. "...you know I got a pair of shoes older than you are..." |
