Yeah, well, methinks the textual Gibsonian descriptions will be hard to effectively translate to a visual medium.

After getting over my initial (anaphylactic) reaction to this, I decided to learn more about this Joseph Kahn fellow...

Check out
Filmmaker Joseph Kahn on Music Videos, Commercials, and the Essential Art of Editing - it's basically a promo piece for Avid non-linear editing, but you get the feeling this guy should at least be capable of doing something visually interesting. The embedded video interviews give a sense of where he's coming from.

His website is here

I have a feeling Peter Hoffman got off on Kahn's George Michael video (which opens very Blade Runner-esque) and annointed him the man...

So what's my point? Keep your expectations tiny and you'll go through life without being so whiny? I still wanna see the movie.

Actually, I was pretty miffed to see someone as hot, er, considered hot by the general public, was playing Eliza Bennett. She's described in the book as "striking", not "12-year-old boy with long hair and gorgeous eyes".

Hmmm, i think we might be taking this to heart, but non-the-less, if Neuromancer were to be a film, it would be akin to bladerunner...

I don't think there is any perfect way in any view of reproducing something has been writen, case point, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

enough said, but if it were ever to be a film, i hope that the director/producer is wise enough to go to WG, despite Neuromancer being a book he wrote 'maturing', knowledge is power.

At least he has a philosophy. This bit is good:
quote:

“Filmmaking is a four-dimensional experience, and that’s the biggest difference between film and any other kind of art form, except for possibly music,” explains Kahn. “We have to experience film on a temporal basis, in a very specific period of time. To do that, we manipulate points of view, stretch time, slow it down, place two images next to each other, and manipulate how we feel about time and how we look at it. So, film offers this completely unique fourth-dimensional experience, and that’s the most powerful essence of filmmaking. It’s an undiscovered part of the process that people haven’t really analyzed to its full extent. I’ve built my entire career based on this: filmmaking is editing – it’s nothing else. Editing creates the experience of film and is the core of filmmaking.”

I hate to say it but almost any flim or art school student would say pretty much the exact same thing. What the guy does not say is if you do not have a good cinematographer, script, or actors no amount of editing will improve it. Thus why almost ever one sighed or groned when we read he directed Torque and Britney Spears videos.

Checked out Kahn's website finally. I must say, the Wu Tang video was [ahem] jiggly and pretty good. Especially the fight scene at the end.

The Jamiroquai piece is well done, too. And somehow he made Gwen Stefani's legs look like they're seven feet long. Oh, wait, they always look like that. Sigh.

But anyway, those for artists I alreadyhave some level of respect for are quite good. Yes, Hollywood can and probably will fuck it up. But I'm actually heartened after checking him out.

Well, unfortunately it's going to be Neuromancer - the film, not Neuromancer - the Music Video Wink

I haven't seen "Torque" but it has a 3.2 out of 10 rating over at IMDB, which doesn't really bode well.

Has anyone heard of a screenwriter yet? Is a major studio on board? Seven Arts Pictures doesn't look like a company that makes $70 million dollar movies. Their Verhoven project with Milla Jovovich was budgeted at a more humble $30 million.

After watching the Knights of Cydonia video, one things popped into my drunken mind :
This guy may well have what it takes to make a 'serious' cyberpunk movie.

By 'serious', I mean : a movie that would not look like its subject matter is a joke.

How I came to this conclusion is properly bewildering, since the video is a demonstration of the exactly opposite principle.

I guess what I mean is :
The guy didn't pull the geeky/kitch references out of his ass. He seems to know what he's talking aboot. Ergo, maybe he is a geek.

Now, another thing :
Wouldn't it be great, if some people involved in making the movie came here and asked for our two cents on how to make it?

It wouldn't cost a dime, and it would maybe ensure that the movie is somewhat endorsed by the fans.

One geek can dream...

I was impressed how he effortlessly compressed the complete plot of an hour-and-a-half B-movie into six minutes (with no dialog). And it was awesome.

Maybe Torque was just a bad movie to begin with? One can always hope.

Meh. It's not like this is actually going to get made.

I get what you mean about the Cydonia vid, Arkan. It's not what a suit would come up with. Dude is at least smart, and perhaps has reasonable geek credentials.

Meanwhile, I'm writing Steve Jackson to see if he won't put out a GURPS Knights of Cydonia sourcebook.

1/3 spaghetti western
1/3 kung fu movie
1/3 1960s scifi

Martin, you seem to have discovered The YouTube Video that Never Loads. At least, it never loads on my systems either at home or at work. What is it?

That's what happens when people post the link to the SWF file of the player instead of just to the page on youtube. Unfortunatly, it doesn't work on most systems because the browser will not pass the URL variable to the player correctly (or maybe because the player needs other variables passed on to it differently).

Ah, it's just the Knights of Cydonia again.

The Chemical Brothers' "Get Yourself High" was pretty cool, too. He seems to like his kung fu. (Obligatory YouTube link if you don't want to look for it on his site.)

Cydonia- Sorry. Didnt work for me at all. More like a jumble of pop culture references glued togheter without much thought.
Even Russell Mulcahy has more finesse.
