Gentlemen Loser was pretty much what I was thinking about Big Grin though that part makes a valid distinguisher between youth and maturity - which I think does play a big part in the matter.

The only problem I see with it is the amount of sprites its going to take to render all of them Frown

A sprite, I assume, is some kind of basic hominid actor form on which one drapes more specific features?

Very close not exactly too technical however Big Grin, A sprite is basically an image that is used in a 2D game. It refers to Characters, Backdrops and Effects that are pre-rendered and saved in your usual formats (.PNG, .BMP.. ect ect)

The engine takes these files and displays them. When animating you are just merely changing sprites at a rapid pace.

With Case for instance I am able to pre-render all of his clothes, animations and any other details that change throughout the game (mainly his health Big Grin).

With a nod and a wink to irony (but no slap and tickle) I give Mr. Phant:

"Enlightenment is when a person leaves behind a state of immaturity and dependence (Unmaundigkeit) for which they themselves were responsible. Immaturity and dependence are the inability to use one's own intellect without the direction of another. One is responsible for this immaturity and dependence, if its cause is not a lack of intelligence or education, but a lack of determination and courage to think without the direction of another. Sapere Aude! Dare to know! is therefore the slogan of the Enlightenment."

Personally, monsieur, I recommend the analogs. Old Brain Cyder Jack, for example. A heady brew, excuse the cliche. Like trodes on ice but nonetheless eau flambeau...

Fascinating reading (for the most part...)

I would say (and indeed, have said before) that "cyberpunk" is essentially an aesthetic, as a genre of science fiction. Beyond a mere literary movement, it also paints cinematic and interactive science fiction formats. Sure we could pick apart what exactly the aesthetic means, but this is what leads us to the path of "well, that's just your opinion dude...."

There is also an underlying idea I began thinking about while reading all the previous posts in this thread: that the most important aspect of "cyberpunk" was its punk-iness. The essence of punk, rebellion against stale commodified rock and roll. Arena rock as product in the late 70's, essentially lost the rebel spirit of rock n' roll as defined by early practitioners like Elvis. Punk was a reaction to the status quo, a rejuvenating injection needed to bring meaning back to rock.

In other words, cyberpunk as reaction to super megapop Star Wars space opera SciFi. Exploring inner galaxies accessible through cyberspace. Poor people recontextualizing technology to fit the needs of the masses. Explorations of the results new technology might potentially lead to. The realization that space may not be the place (or at least, not the ONLY place that might be hugely significant to humans and their post-offspring....)

Cyberpunk not as genre but as a group of writers: the cyberpunks.... By this thought line, the Cyberpunk Movement is over; the reactionary nature of the fiction has been released into the greater omnibus of science fiction. it is now part of the meta-genre. Cyberpunk seems invalid today because it is no longer necessary to point out that space opera is a limited concept.

Current science fiction has embraced the cyberpunk aesthetic and assimilated it. In a sense then, it is very much alive in that it exists within the the essence of what defines science fiction. It is not necessary to create new pieces of "cyberpunk" except as pure exercises in the aesthetic.

In that sense we should probably view cyberpunk as being over. But there will always be a place for new ideas to illuminate the shortcomings of the old ideas. The real question is whether or not "cyberpunk" can continue to have validity as real world technology and science progresses beyond the predictions of the late 70's cyberpunks....

I don't think there was any point in history where knowing what a sprite was made someone either cool or hip.

Dork is the word that springs to mind...

I mean that in the best possible way, of course. Wink

Interesting how nerd, dork, geek, et al have become terms of superiority.

I think it's a money thing. Money is power. Geeks hold prime earning power in the current economy.

The coolness of being a surfer combined with knowing calculus.

My wife was a sociology major when I met her. She said I was one of Marx's 'marginal men'.

That's me: marginal.

Keep in mind, I know what a sprite is. I self-identify as a dork (and nerd).

I think that geek has a mildly positive connotation now, but nerds are loosing their cred. It turns out that the nerds are earning good money in the IT department, but the really rich guys are still in the boardrooms and the corner offices, and they still wear ties.

Now I have to learn the distinctions between geek, nerd, and dork. You weary me with your incessant challenges to my ignorance, colin. If people would just stop introducing me to terms and concepts I don't understand, I would be perfectly informed. Wink

there is also a difference between a Gamer and a Nerd too. But then there is also a difference between a Gamer and a Game Developer Big Grin

The cultures are very different from each other.

Nerds tend to be know it alls, able to do the most boring stuff you can imagine (hence why they eventually go off into IT, Accounting or Science).

Gamers on the other hand are deadbeats Big Grin the mass majority suffer from Un-employment, the result of why they play games is out of boredom.

Game Developers are an evil mix of Gamer and IT Goon. Big Grin We can not only talk really technical but we also have pretty casual personalities so we get the best of both worlds really.. The personality varies however. Some developers (Like Bethesda) are fanboys, they won't shut the hell up and talk such bullshit - we see this a lot when your geeky gamer friend starts over exaggerating how good a game is. Others are more strict, like myself where its a low tolerance to bullshit - this is better because the work ultimately is better and you present yourself in less of a social manner.

Geek: Someone who is interested, perhaps obsessively, in how and why things work, and with hacking things to make them better. Usually optimistic about technology. Can often be reasonably social and/or well adjusted. See Boing Boing. Those are geeks.

Nerd: Someone who is deeply invested in an obscure knowledge base, and has a desire to exploit or show off this knowledge. Usually accompanied by a certain level of arrogance and social misfit status.

Dork: Someone who just doesn't fit in very well. Often overlaps with nerd tendencies.

So really knowing about sprites is a nerd thing. Having nothing better to do with myself than come up with these definitions and write this post is a dork thing.
