Actually not much. Honestly WG's Sci-Fi literature is the only one I consider to be cyberpunk. May sound one-dimensional, but I can't help it. I've read many "Dark Future" stories. I have a big volume in which all short stories by Philip K. Dick are collected. So far I've read some of them, but I noticed they are pretty outdated today. I admire Dick for his huge body of work, but his stories certainly had a better effect on readers during the Cold War since they reflect all the anxieties American society suffered from at that time. He wrote well though. Dick's short stories are very helpful for me to find the structure for my own stories. Today I read "Second Variety". I think this was filmed as "Screamers" starring Peter Weller. |

Dick is about metaphysics and the like. He's got the Borges thing going on which is why I suspect Gibson doesn't like his work: he'd already been on Borges for some while.

Gib doesn't like PKDick? If so, I reckon it's because Dick's a poor stylist.

And Pynchon. Gibson has said in interviews that he never really read Dick because he'd read Pynchon. »» "Forget infinity. I've got books waiting for me to read them." — colin »»"Speculative novels of last Tuesday." — William Gibson |

Yes, Pynchon as well. Pynchon has the paranoia, Dick has the metaphysical concept-as-story. Dick isn't much of a stylist either, tis true. but I like his books a lot. |
