I say we GM a cow that consists entirely of prime eye fillet, can grow in a disused airing cupboard and matures in only three weeks.
Of course, for the hippies who wanna feed the masses, this would break the other cow (that's sacred) into letting people eat GM. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

How about just one big fat Australian instead?

And what do you think we'll feed him on? Vegetarians?

Probably a bad idea. We Brits already tried cannibalism-as-agribusiness and found it's no good for the livestock. That's why we get our meat from Oz and New Zealand. For all we know you might already have one big guy that you just take slices off when you need them.

those from oz might like this paper...
if you don't want to believe this paper take heart in the fact that "Global greenhouse gas concentrations have increased by a third in the past two hundred years, and currently sit at 430ppm" is wrong. As far as I know we're still a few years from reaching 400ppm |

what the hell are carbon credits anyways?
where does the money go? are these companies forced to buy credits? 26 billion is a bit of cash. A lot of good could be done with that, but methinks it's noise and b.s.? non? |

Carbon credits is like me beating seventeen shades of shit out of you, greendreams, then paying for someone else's hospital fees.
IE, it's throwing money at a problem, in the entirely wrong direction. But because we're taking a hit, it means we're paying for it. And therefore negating it. But it makes us feel all good. Like we're really doing something, just like paying you $30 a month to World vision to think you're really helping poverty. The Lithos School of Curiousity is now enrolling |

Gore's message loses bite
ONLY one week after Live Earth, Al Gore's green credentials slipped while hosting his daughter's wedding in Beverly Hills. Gore and his guests at the weekend ceremony dined on Chilean sea bass - arguably one of the world's most threatened fish species. Also known as Patagonian toothfish, the species is under pressure from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities in the Southern Ocean, jeopardising the sustainability of remaining stocks. The species is currently managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Living Marine Resources, the body which introduced a catch and trade documentation scheme as an attempt to tackle illegal poaching of this species. Working with non-government organisations, the Humane Society International's focus is now on pursuit of illegal fishing operators who, in the rush to cash in on the highly valued species, plunder stocks with no regard for sustainability. It has been estimated that more than 50 per cent of toothfish traded is illegally caught, and includes juveniles vital to the ongoing toothfish population. For many years HSI has expressed concern over the huge numbers of seabirds that die each year on the hooks of illegally set demersal longlines, threatening the long-term viability of those populations. Yet, while legal operators in the Southern Ocean are obliged to follow strict environmental rules, illegal operators undermine the sustainability of their fishing operations. Recently, HSI petitioned the US Government asking that they certify and sanction Spain for allowing Spanish nationals known to engage in pirate fishing operations to continue to harvest toothfish in a declared conservation area. Success would allow the US Government to embargo Spanish toothfish imports until such time as Spain demonstrates compliance of its nationals with international law and agreements. As we await a response from the US, thousands of endangered seabirds die, while the sustainability of the Patagonian toothfish and the legal fishing industry inches closer to the brink of extinction. A strong and concerted effort by Governments, the fishing industry, the conservation community and by the public which drives consumer demand, is required to put an end to pirate fishing operations in the Southern Ocean - otherwise the ecological sustainability of the toothfish is at risk. And Al Gore could choose something else to eat. http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,22090734-5001031,00.html |

what's weird is that they probably thought about it some. Farmed fish aren't the answer, they spread sea lic to the wild stock..(maybe inland fish farms?)
beef and poultry have their own issues. In a perfect world, wild fish would still be something to be proud of eating... how about krill burgers? |

Someone sent me this today:
"Greenbox" converts auto emissions into fuel I'm a bit suspicious of the whole "we can't show it to anyone" thing, but the concept doesn't sound nuts. ------------------------------ "Gentlemen! I have created... this thing!" -- Doctor Weird |

it's the same concept used by this guy on big factories
I am seriously looking at a way to create a woodstove that uses algae to trap carbon and create biofuel... |

Biodiesel yields of common crops
Dear Mr Branson: I am writing to claim the 25 million dollars. You offered such moneys to the party that finds a solution for existing greenhouse gases in the environment right now. Algae. Algae offers a homeostatic throttle for the carbon cycle. Buying an amount of land that you can afford, you can can establish massive algae farms. Over time, as the algae pulls carbon out of the air, it will grow less successfully. For example, greenhouse operators artificially push their carbon levels up to 575ppm from the 390ppm we have ambient right now. If you ran a chain of gas stations that made bio diesel out of the algae and sold it, your buisness would be WORSE as you succeeded. Still you can afford it and I think you should do it. Virgin biodiesel. I wonder how many acres it would take to pull that carbon down? We know it doesn't like light much so there are probably some cheap mountain valleys you could buy. Problem is once people know that carbon is being pulled out, they will pollute worse! And china will charge foreign countries for gust of air from it's carbon rich zones...(nah just kidding) There are already guys using algae on factories and cars..(see posts above) why bother? Why not just start some big farms and pull cown the ambient number. I think 300ppm would be fine, it's been under that for 600,000 years, prolly we should keep up that trend. you can reach ,me on this thread to hand over the cheque. Also, don't overdo it. I don't want it too cold! yours truly greendreams |
