This caught me off guard.

Eight convicted over Arkan murder.

Well, I'll miss the French Guy and his 1 billion posts. I am at least happy that it took EIGHT to bring him down, instead of the usual lone gunman.

Read in The Times, this morning, that they have developed a chip, that when implanted on the back of the hand, allows instant purchasing. Already being tested in Spain.

The "Mark of the Beast" came a little earlier than expected, methinks.

If this is true, the fallout is going to fun to watch.
The Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned remarks by the Israeli ambassador to Australia in which he told Haaretz that the two countries are white sisters amid "the yellow race" of Asia.

    ...

"Israel and Australia are like sisters in Asia," Tamir said in an interview with Haaretz during a visit to Israel this week. "We are in Asia without the characteristics of Asians. We don't have yellow skin and slanted eyes. Asia is basically the yellow race. Australia and Israel are not - we are basically the white race. We are on the western side of Asia and they are on the southeastern side."

Music industry sues 8000 file-sharers.

quote:
The industry has now filed about 18,000 lawsuits in the US, the largest market for music sales, and 13,000 in the rest of the world.

The legal proceedings involve both criminal and civil suits and are aimed at "uploaders", people who put copyrighted songs onto Internet file sharing networks to offer to music fans without permission.

The IFPI says many of those targeted for legal action were parents whose children had been illegally file sharing.

Others facing law suits include a laboratory assistant in Finland and a German parson.

I had a hard time if the following should've been in the whoa, weird or bad news thread:

Bush Sets Defense As Space Priority

quote:
President Bush has signed a new National Space Policy that rejects future arms-control agreements that might limit U.S. flexibility in space and asserts a right to deny access to space to anyone "hostile to U.S. interests."

The concept of rejecting an agreement not even made yet is funny. I assume that any future President can toss this aside since it is a Presidential policy directive only. I suppose it is a matter of time before somebody places weapons in space though.

Cloned Animal Food Products

What the real 'whoa' news is is that its obvious these guys don't want competitors to be able to identify thier products as 'clone free'. These food lobby guys are powerful, sueing anyone in the U.S who tried to label their dairy products as 'hormone free', so I could see them getting away with this.
In Canada, the last survey I saw said 90% of Canadians wanted GM foods to be labeled as such but its not anywhere on the political radar.

Stingrays on the rampage!

This reminds me of the lions in the "ghost and the darkness" movie. they attacked humans for no real reason and it was cited in some circles as the earth trying to defend itself against humans. Maybe this is part of the same phenomenon, stringrays chasing us down on water and lions on the land. Pretty soon there will be murderous monkeys in the malls and death squads of feral cats running though the subdivisions!

I distinctly remember stealing one of these from a third-level elf in a D&D session back in 1980.

Colin prediction: The 2D, microwave only, leaves a small shadow and is slightly reflective 'invisibility' material will not be extensible to a 3D, visible light, effective invisibility material in the forseeable future, but will occasionally come up in the news every so often like that other invisibility material that only works if you project a very bright picture of the background onto the object being hidden, and then not very well. And we won't get jet packs or flying cars either. Mad

Israeli jets clash with German ship near Lebanon.

quote:
Germany daily Der Tagesspiegel earlier on Wednesday quoted a junior German defence minister as telling a parliamentary committee that two Israeli F-16 fighters flew low over the German ship and fired two shots.

The jets also released infra-red countermeasures to ward off any rocket attack, the paper quoted him as saying.

The minister did not say when the incident happened or what had caused it, the paper said.

WTF?

The whole fact that these machines need to be funded by an administration negates the possibility of their functioning in any proper way...

Talk about a placebo...

New tech always scares people, it will get better. Also I noted on the post that I think it doubtfull of malicious flipping of votes in the case of the people quoted inthe story.

quote:
Mine worked fine, but there is a perspective issue with touchscreens that I had a problem with too. It happens to me every time I go to Disney and try to use their kiosk to find something. I put my finger over the box as I see it but the screen highlights something right below what I want. I had a couple of my votes do that last week, so I adjusted my finger a bit higher and fixed it. Offhand it seems if somebody is good enough to hack the machines they would be good enough not to show you that your vote was going to the OTHER guy.

You and the original commenter seem to overlook the fact that all is required is for your choice to be above his opponent for this to foul up. Whether it's malicious or not is neither here nor there. The fact that the voting machinery is unreliable isn't a problem for you?
