I think it would take more than a series of attacks on webservers to make a real impact on the Scientologists, though.

Onthe other hand, perhaps a swift, sharp attack from their lawyers will make this go away shortly. I hear the CoS is somewhat skilled in legal matters...

Well,

I guess that the best way to deal with this kind of problem is:

a) Don't give space for martyrs or martyrdom
b) Watch their activities and see if they are compliant with the local laws
c) Watch where they earn money and if they correctly pay their taxes

In the past we have lots of problems with Opus Dei and a local increased version of it called "TFP" (from "Tradition, Family and Property" - a nazi sect that brainwashed teenagers). They were "tamed" (in fact, the second was destroyed) when their leaders had to face law.

The thing about the whole situation that has tickled my SF fancy is the notion that this is a symptom of a kind of collective consciousness. Some kind of real, measurable force manifesting around a common thread.

Whether it really amounts to anything more than a fart in a strong breeze remains to be seen.

Scientology itself is a fart in the wailing screams of the death of organized religion.

The recent increase in fundamental ideologies and extreme practices is, in my estimation, a reaction (likely subconscious) to a world that is moving toward a place where organized religion is seen as antiquated and juvenile.

They have demonstrated they can move followers so as to cause the world to react but they have no actual majority nor an actual plan to implement.

Religion works best when the world is in chaos and needs structure, any structure, on which to hold against the gyre. When there are other options man has, over the last 500 or so years, taken them instead.

Look at Cromwell, the people decided they'd rather have a corrupt monarchy and bad decisions than live under a religious zealot.

The major powers of the last four or five centuries have been increasingly moving away from a state based religion.

That's why the loyal worshipers of some religions are freaking out, their power is largely at an end.

Really, once people at large learned how to read and could buy books it was just a matter of time.
