Gary Gygax, the creator of "Dungeons and Dragons" :

This news helped me realise that without RPGs my life would be so much different...

Shit, Gary died?

Man. I met him once, back in the 90's at a game store when he published a new game. Told me all about the early days.

That's too bad.

Wired: http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/03/report-gary-gyg.html

TSR really screwed him back in the day. or, rather, these guys called the Bloom brothers did.

I considered posting the news myself, when I saw it. Sad news. The man is responsible, indirectly, for some of the most fun I've had sitting around a table with a bunch of nerds.

It was probably seeing the sneak peak of D&D 4th edition that finished him off.

Kradlum, I don't think that link is going where you want it to go?

WTF? Six posts and no 'missed his saving throw' joke? Too much respect (albeit merited), not enough black humor!

This is a worthy tribute, I think. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Random Harlot Encounter Table.

I don't think the "heyday" is over at all. There are more RPGs and RPG related things out there then ever before and D&D is still king of the heap as far as I know.

I suppose the real question at this point is:
Will he be buried in a massive underground tomb full of irrationally deadly traps*, bizarre creatures and various treasures? I think that's the way he would have wanted it.

*He really seemed to enjoy the words "no saving throw." Back when I played, I would transplant traps from Gygax-penned modules into the game when players started to get too cocky.
