This thread is like the Weird News and Good News threads.

Only it's about BAD NEWS.

Please keep in mind that different people can see the same event as good or bad.
And there's a good chance you'll want to punch people who disagree with you in the face.

Feel free to create a separate thread if you feel like debating something.

I kick off with :
Utah Theater Cancels 'Brokeback Mountain'

quote:
Gayle Ruzicka, president of the conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said not showing the film set an example for the people of Utah.

Strangely, this *is* bad news:

Anonymous trolling is now illegal

quote:
It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess.

A british researcher did a study and decided the most depressing day of the year is Jan 23.That is the day Canada chose for its federal election.
I think the conservatives are going to win a powerless minority government. Canada will have its own George Bush.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that at least 76 dogs nationwide are believed to have died as a result of eating contaminated Diamond Pet Foods.

The company has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food because tests showed high levels of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring toxic chemical that comes from a fungus found on corn and other grains that causes severe liver damage in animals."

Poor puppies. Poor kitties. That makes me sad.

The reader comments on the Boing Boing article about it suggest that this isn't anywhere near as bad as it sounds. What it makes illegal is anonymous harrassment, which was (surprise!) already illegal.

Oh for Christ's sake, don't these so-called "lawmakers" have more important things to do than make up vague laws that are un-enforceable at best, and subject to abuse by our increasingly fascist government at worst?

As if the courts aren't overwhelmed already.

%$#@&!!!

Here's what looks (to me) like the best explanation:

http://www.privacylawyer.ca/blog/2006/01/anonymous-net-...-headed-to-jail.html

Basically, it expands the old telephone annoyance/harass/threaten law to internet communications via software (such as email, IM, and VoIP), but not internet services (I assume this means bulletin boards or message boards, IRC, usenet, that sort of thing). There still needs to be clarification regarding the difference between "software" and "service," though.

Amnesty releases new claims of torture, ill-treatment at Guantanamo Bay (Forbes)

I don't really know where to sort this one :
it's good to have testimonies out...
But what they tell is pretty damn fucking bad.

quote:
He also spoke of beatings, sexual assaults, threats to his family and having to endure lengthy periods in solitary confinement, plus disease, illness and infection being rife among those held at the camp.

Really?!? A politically driven prison that's off-shore and uses torture and ill-treatment.

Well, colour me "fucking surprised" (HINT - it's the crayon next to "Prussian Blue")

That's not a surprise for anybody.
But it's the closest thing we'll get to a proof.

I'd, frankly, like to beat the shit out of them with my Ironbark slab. (I'm extremely equal-opportunistic with racist-anyones, male or female. It's ironic, as well as satisfying).

In other news (this is for boog and anarcho):

Axl's car deals fall through

"I just washed my sportscar. Only kidding; it got repossessed, and I left seafood in the trunk."

Points for spotting the above reference.

Jacques Chirac, on the use of French nukes

quote:
France will maintain and develop its nuclear forces to counter states that might resort ``to terrorist means'' by using weapons of mass destruction, President Jacques Chirac said.

More detailed French article

quote:
Pour le chef de l'Etat, le terrorisme, mais aussi "la garantie de nos approvisionnements stratégiques et la défense de pays alliés", sont des cas où l'utilisation de la force nucléaire est envisageable.

Which I translate as :
"For the Head of the State, terrorism, but also "the insurance of our strategical supplies and the protection of out allies", are cases where the use of nuclear weapons can be considered.

What the cock?

"Strategical supplies" ?
Like oil?

"Iran doesn't want to sell us oil anymore, so we can nuke them"?

Although I contributed to his election,
I do not condone anything this buffoon does.
I promise I'll vote against him in 2007,
before leaving the country for good.

Like Al Qaida have any control over what is going on in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's only in the minds of the US people that Al Qaida are acting in those theatres. The reality is insurgents and warlords that are there because the US invaded and would be there with or without Al Qaida.
