From the Related Story link at the bottom:
quote:
According to Riggs, "Freeman had the experience necessary to help his fellow pilot because he was a Naval Aviator that had logged over 2000 hours as an F-18 flight instructor for the Marine Corp. And you know the Marine Corp, they only allow the best of the best to be instructors." Riggs added, "Freeman had also logged over 100 hours flight time on the L-39, the same jet he flew yesterday. In his career he had logged a total of 3,310 flight hours."
I think that rules out incompetence.
quote:
One witness on the ground said they saw the jet's canopy blow and separate from the jet. Another witness thought they saw the jet dumping fuel before the impact.
...
A witness known only as Dave posted his first hand account on the internet, "I watched the pilot eject at the last possible second as he made the plane turn sharply left. In my book he is a true hero, he could probably saved himself by ejecting earlier but I watched the man sacrifice his own life to save those of us that were at the grocery store and all the people working in the warehouse next door."
God bless him.
quote:
The legal owner of the aircraft is Air USA of Las Vegas, Nevada which is a company that provides foreign military aircraft for aviation enthusiast[s]. The pilot was repossessing the aircraft on their behalf and was returning it from Anchorage.
Now it sounds like bad maintenance.

It is good news indeed Etruscan,
At that speed (faster than I can drive my truck.) (ya think?) I am amazed that far more damage did not occur. I could smell fuel for about five hundred yards around the crash site The wreckage is a heart beat away from the local post office, The state Ferry terminal, a large grocery, Huge seafood warehouse, and My grandmothers nursing home. All of these places smell of fuel still today. witch according to several people the saw drop (i dunno how ) from the jet before it hit. So yeah, quite a piece of flying. Very Sad. Could be so, so much worse.Frown

Indeed. Somebody should sue the fuck out of Air USA of Las Vegas, NV, imho (although I'm guessing the fault probably lies with the last civilian "aviation enthusiast" responsible for maintenance).

I think it means the U.S. Navy is effectively defenseless.

yeah...among other things. Like, them and Iran have been real friendly as of late...

I know we're going to fuck with Iran next, because in the minds of power, we have to, to maintain economic supremacy.

This complicates things, but I think they need to be a little more complicated than the Iraq thing...

I dunno...we sure do live in interesting times.

Not to mention, China. The fact that all of Japan's oil has to be shipped just south of Taiwan is one more reason for them to worry about the US navy.

That would be an unmitigated disaster. But you're right, it's not the bomb, it's the oil embargo they feared all along: "Oil is too vital a resource to be trusted to the Arabs." - Henry Kissinger

To solve all these issues I suggest a mano a mano between Putin and the American president.
Putin looks like he could kick Dubya aal the way to Tejas. And back.
