Putin was fucking Spetsnaz. Dubya barely crawled out enough from under the hookers and beer cans to make flight school.

Forget speculative global politics, now this is bad :

Acid tanker sinks after collision in Channel

quote:
A tanker carrying 10,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid has sunk in the English Channel.

It happened right next to Cherbourg, which is the closest thing I have to 'roots' and 'home'.

There are no plans whatsoever to pump the 10,000 tonnes of acid out of the damn thing.

Experts have stated that if the contents were spilled in the sea,
the effects would be "lethal, but temporary".

So, in other words :
"Yes it's dangerous, but we don't want to spend our money pumping it out.
We'd rather let this Damocles sword hanging around.
Yes we are fucking you, why do you ask?"

This reminds me of Stephenson's "Zodiac".

Wait, what is that feeling?
Oh, it's rage!

It dissipates in water over time, Arkan. So yeah, it will be bad at first but when it breaks down (with the help of water), it becomes phospourous and iron, which are actually good for plants and the like.

Now if it's being shipped in the gelatin form, that could be nasty, since it would all float along the surface and wash up on beaches.

But... there are lots of it.
It'll dissolve, but how long would it take?
How much will it destroy?
Nasty prospects...

The only reason why nobody is pumpibg it, is that they hope nobody will notice the spill.
It's probably not as visible as oil.

Well unlike oil, it MIXES with water so separating the "wheat" from the "chaff", in this case, becomes a bit complicated. It's unfortunate and there is a certain sense of irony when the ship had large, red, bold capitals "Safety First" on the command tower.

Which is why it makes all the more sense to cleanly pump the stuff out of the ship, while it's not leaking.

Correction: Putin was never Spetsnaz - my mistake. He was, however, in the KGB, and said in his bio that his tasks included putting down dissident activity in Leningrad...

I may have got the idea from seeing a photo in a magazine or newspaper somewhere of Putin training with the Spetsnaz.

Still, between W and Putin, my money's on the Russian...

Oh, and according to Wikipedia, ol' Vlad enjoys a spot of Judo... which he's studied since he was thirteen. And now is a 6th level black belt.

Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research ... creating human-animal hybrids ... Human life is a gift from our Creator - and that gift should never be discarded, devalued, or put up for sale.
God Schmod, I want my monkeyman!

Alito is now on the Supreme Court, just in time to smile for the State of The Union cameras... and now i feel as though, very soon indeed, abortion is not going to be the footloose, fancy-free option/RIGHT that it has been for so many lovely years. anyone wanna help start a little concern that mails unwanted children to anti-choice zealots?
'cmon!, it'll be fun...

quote:
An Egyptian ferry carrying about 1,400 people sank overnight on its way across the Red Sea from Saudia Arabia.

Egyptian officials told news service reporters that 12 survivors have been rescued so far, and that 14 bodies had been recovered.
